Topic: Lonestar the Kilrathi presents: Star Citizen the Update

Lonestar the Kilrathi started this discussion 12 years ago #38,004

So a lot has happened since the last time I gave an update on the status of the record breaking smash hit video game Star Citizen. Still in early alpha, but with regular content updates, the game is really beginning to take shape. Last month was Citizen Con, a backer only event, and during that time CIG (the developers) showcased a demo performing never before attempted game mechanics, completely unique to Star Citizen. The Multi-crew ship Demo showed how they created internal physics for ships that are separated from the physics of the outside world, this allows for crews to get up and walk around the ship and perform duties while the ship is being piloted (i.e. flying around) by another player. Every other game before this has had "attach points" where players could attach to a vehicle to ride it around, or the vehicle exists on "rails" and the player has no control over the vehicle but can move around. Apparently this was an incredibly ambitious design decision, and required rewriting much of CryEngine to support many bubbles of physics separate from a larger "space" with it's own physics. the result is amazing.

Tomorrow is PAX Australia and CIG is going to be revealing their FPS demo, which is looking to be amazing. More a tactical shooter than an arena shooter, Star Citizen's FPS gameplay will be more like rainbow 6 than call of duty. And like ships with variable and extensive (re: high fidelity like i've never seen before) damage states, your playable character will take damage and lose control of limbs if they are injured. A wonderful Rescue and Recovery type mechanic (as opposed to a healer class, it's a medic) can help to save you if you have become critically injured, and removing wounded from the battle will be as important a job as being a Marine. And if you do die, then you won't "respawn" either, you're dead until the next match (as far as the Arena mode goes. in the persistent universe if you die, then you're just dead.) very much like hardcore Search and Destroy in Call of Duty, or like America's Army if you were ever fortunate enough to play that game. It's looking to be quite exciting with 5 or 6 level of armor from basic flac jackets all the way up to full body robotic exoskeleton suits. And with an array of gadgets (everything from personal force fields to holographic decoy clones) and ballistic/laser weapons the FPS part of the game is shaping up to be a full on game in it's own right. And according to the devs the FPS will be extensive enough that players who don't even want to fly a spaceship can have as much fun as any UEE Space Marine. Need work? Take a job as a member of an assault and boarding party, jump on a ship, ride to where the action is, wait until you're docked with something, cut through the hull, kill all the enemies with FPS badassery, and then get dropped off on some alien world to look for more work as private security on board capital class ships or something. Maybe an exploration team needs a Marine to kill any weird little aliens they discover. Maybe an organization is planning to assault and capture a space station for their own nefarious purposes and needs someone with no morals. Maybe a bounty hunter needs an expert marksman to help assassinate a high ranking UEE official and doesn't want to sully his own name. honestly the options for sandbox gameplay as an FPS player will be pretty limitless. Maybe a ships captain wants to hire you as a turret gunner on board his pirate mother ship... it just all sounds so fucking cool.

There's also a new concept ship with unique gameplay mechanics, an info runner (think neuromancer or any William Gibson book) which can be used to transport, capture, interrupt or send sensitive data. There will be hackable "comms" in the game, so pretty much if you send an ingame message to someone it could be intercepted. This will be important for larger Organizations (especially criminal) in that their communications could be hacked, stolen, sold, and their plans could be ruined. So, an info runner will be a way to ensure that your message reaches it's destination in secret. It kinda sounds like a lot of fun, it's a spy ship, and it spying/selling information will be an awesome mechanic to play with. I can totally see some big pirate org losing everything because some dude in a Drake Herald hacked their comms and found out about some plans and then sells it to the UEE so they can find the pirate base and kill them. awesome stuff.

As far as the current state of the game this new patch covers quite a lot of rework on the ships targeting and control systems. Dogfighting will be quite a lot better for Joystick and gamepad users, targeting has been totally reworked from a placeholder system to a fully functioning Lag PiP system like found on many modern military aircraft. for people that really like simulators, this one has quite a lot of depth and is growing more simish every patch. it's really starting to feel very polished, and with the inclusion of 2 recently completed dog fighters the gameplay is growing very diverse and specialized ships are really starting to have very well defined roles with unique gameplay.

It's a great time to be playing.

TL;DR

In conclusion, here's a video of some gameplay. For context this video was published by one of my random human teammates with the title "You Turncoat Kilrathi BASTARD!" He was pretty upset that I decided to switch sides midgame and start killing my wingmen. It took him a minute to figure out what was going on, but once he did the rage was sweet, sweet nectar. Never trust a Kilrathi, filty humans.

the PAX live stream will start in 8 hours from right now. the VOD will be available on twitch after that and then they'll upload it all to youtube in HD. So if you're interested in seeing a truly next-NEXT-gen game (it's actually to be another first in that's it'll be all native 64-bit which required a complete rewrite of cryengine because while it will run in a 64 bit environment the engine is really all in 32-bit.) then check out this thread tomorrow and i'll linkify some examples of the FPS gameplay.

until then, consider this in-engine fan made FPS trailer an example of the kind of PvP gameplay the community is expecting. Every character in this short sequence would be a live player and not an AI.

same guy made this gameplay trailer for the salvaging mechanic and kind of shows you what it might be like to be a treasure hunter looking for crashed ships in an asteroid field. for real salvage operations there's a dedicated large scale salvage vessel called the reclaimer that's the size of several 747's stacked on top of each other.

for treasure hunters there may be employers looking for lost shipments, maps to hidden stations and derelict cap ships and whatnot that might have valuable equipment or loot or whatnot. and that kinda scratches the surface, it's a really well thought out bit of gameplay that kind of emerges from the general simulated galactic economy. it sounds pretty fun.

again, same guy, this time a gameplay trailer for the Search and Rescue mechanic using the dedicated Cutlass SAR. It's a pretty awesome space ambulance. it'll be used by AI to rescue ejected pilots and that kind of thing. Players can own them and use them for all kinds of stuff. It has a med-bay for patching people up which will make it very useful during PvP. Since player death is persistent there is going to be a huge need for rescue. Organizations will use these during operations for their intended purposes (basically healing and transport) but can also be used for really great stuff, like piracy. The Cutlass SAR has a docking collar equipped with a hull cutting rig to grant "medics" access to other ships. pirates WILL be using these as boarding vessels and to also hide their identities. Traveling as an ambulance along with a wingman in a police ship a few pirates could really ruin some people's day.

so they just finished their event in australia and they did the FPS demo. It was fucking glorious. They have way exceeded my expectations and those were already super high. In the Demo 2 teams were fighting for control of a very large space station. The station is derelict and so there was trash and debris everywhere. The A team worked their way around trying to kill the defending team, and the defending team took up a position in a huge like room like a huge warehouse space, and all the while one of the players was working his way to the Artificial Gravity System...

Once he got there he switched off the breakers and all over the station an alert system started sounding off a klaxon. then, all of that trash and debris that was on the ground started rising up and beginning to float around. The Marines started floating too, and from that point on the rest of the fight was in zero G.

i have never seen anything like that, seriously. flying around, walking on ceilings, ragdoll bodies doing cartwheels, debris floating into your firing line occluding your shot, i'm serious it was fucking amazing looking. it makes BF4 look like a wii game and it's not even close to being an Beta yet. video incoming later.
