This has been catholic doctrine for like decades. I don't know why this is news.

because pope benedict tried to roll back everything progressive john paul did with vatican II and it really appealed to noncatholic protestants for some reason. now the catholic church under pope francis is working to undo benedict and re-modernize the catholic church and the bible-banging protestant literalists are of course outraged anyone would validate scientific ideas from a religious standpoint.

also i spoke with my dad about this earlier and he shrugged and said, "so? john paul said that 20 years ago."
catholics are actually pretty much not into literal interpretaions of the bible anyway.

I mean, I don't think even Benedict disagreed. It is probably a 30 year-old church teaching or older. I think this pope is probably better than Benedict but I don't understand why people are treating this like it is some provocative break with tradition.

I'd guess most people don't know the doctrines of their own religion. I mean how many claim to be Christian but rarely or never go to church? Evolution is pretty much always a hot button topic, like gay marriage or global warming. I think it's neat the pope is making it clear where the church stands on the subject of the big bang and evolution, maybe a small percentage of people will get over it and accept reality. It seems more likely that people will just hug their beliefs tighter and forget all about it until it's in the headlines again. I've mostly kept up with the news for the majority of my adult life and I'm always disappointed but never surprised at the reaction of the masses to the same old topics. /rambling
