He's actually an advisor you can recruit in the game. He can increase your technology levels very quickly while he's advising you. But having him can also trigger a random event where you lose to him in a swing dancing bet and have to make your country do stupid things, like invade a good surf spot or send spies to China.

I played EU3 as Ireland and took over Europe almost entirely, and had a fair few colonies. I may have employed the use of cheats. A bit.Pic related -- the Irish Empire at its height.

Couldn't get into 3 at all, thought it was ugly and the menus weren't intuitive., but ever since I started playing Victoria 2, I changed my mind about the series. I mainly think that the "managament points" system is overwhelmingly stupid and works terribly too, from the way you get them to the way they are used in the game. Battle results are decided by extremely stupid dice rolls, you can change a province's culture and make it a core very easily, which I dislike, westernization is terrible, and the expansions Paradox releases are all shit. EU3 has a lot of these problems too, but the sequel not only didn't fix them, it threw into the trash the perfectly fine gameplay of EU3 in exchange for soomething so counter-intuitive like it is now. That would be my main complaints against EU4. I don't remember that much since it has been a long time since I played. I mostly play Victoria 2 and CK2 now.

I think that I can understand your points, but personally I find it allright. Maybe as I get more into it I'll crave something more challenging like EU 3, but 4 is great for now. Still got a load of campaigns I'd like to do.
I do really want to get CK 2, as well. Partly because you can go back and restore the Roman Empire, then import the save into EU 4 and play as the Romans through the Renaissance. Am kicking myself for not picking it up while it was on sale.

Don't get me wrong, I had a shitload of fun with EU4 at first. I just got cynical about faster than usual.
