Okay, this isn't biased at all.

I am in favour of improving gaming journalism, sure. I think that that Quinn lady was and is manipulative. And I find it a little annoying that many just want to shout "misogynist" at the GamerGate people, and apparently completely ignore their (claimed) focus on being critical of games journalism.

Though, I do think that the GamerGate movement has lots of misigynist idiots in it, terrified of the feminist boogeyman (boogeywoman?) that they've built up as some great threat to their hobby. It could be that it has too many such idiots in it to really be effective, idiots who are inevitably attracted when there's some relation to the issue of women in gaming. So it might not quite be the right movement to improving gaming journalism.

Oh hey, just had a random thought. Buspuppie, a a long while ago you posted a link to one of Anita Sarkeesian's videos. I responded negatively at the time, since I hadn't seen any of her vids myself and bought into the hype about her arguments being bullshit. But I watched one of her videos recently (the Ms male character one), and thought it was really good. So I take back my criticism that I made of her a few years ago. Thanks.

Nothing in particular. Since Gamergate kicked off, all of that hot air was blowing around again about her "attacking" gaming. I realised I'd never watched any of her stuff, and decided to try watching one,

I agreed with pretty much all of her points, and was impressed with the research she had put in.

Honestly I was on the side of gamergate until they started to attack all the feminists instead of actually attacking the shitty journalists and whoever is high up on the actual conspiracy. Holy shit, what the fuck does Anita have to do with any of this shit?! All she does is make money by telling SJWs what they want to hear, and they pay her!

Honestly, this is all starting to remind me of the French Revolution. Going from a good cause to eating away at itself while attacking would-be bystanders. I mean, what better way to get the feminist support than to protest the fact that the reviewer in gaming journalism judge the indie games they review by how the game maker puts out?!

But I am out of the loop now after all that shit. I can't be bothered to keep up with gamergate. I feel it has become too distracted. It's like the digital Tea Party or OWS, the social issues within the movement being used to distract from the main point of it, and make it commit illogical actions that harm the public's opinion of it.

@OP why do you insist "feminists" (see: any woman who doesnt want to receive death threats or be doxxed) are rabid for not wanting to be run out of their homes for expressing distaste for gaming communities?

or, in short, why does @OP hate women?

I just don't see what attacking the feminists has to do with exposing corruption in video games journalism and purging the advertisers of these corrupt journalists.

Right, this is why I'm doubtful that it can do what it sets out to do. Because of this strong undertone of anti-feminism it has, it has a lot of trouble getting support. There are people in it who just want to focus on addressing gaming journalism, but there's lots of people who see it as fighting against the dreaded feminism. And it doesn't help that Quinn is all too happy to leverage that to get back at people who are criticising her involvement with reviewers, so GamerGate already has this pretty tarnished reputation.

I would like gaming journalism to be improved, because it does have some shady stuff going on in it, but I just don't think that GamerGate has come at it from the right angle to stand much of a chance. It was always going to attract misogynist idiots and in turn be vulnerable to getting automatically dismissed because of that element of it.

@507,149 (HaikerensGuide !dBGi/iH4eY)
Well, some people have conflated the two. They see feminism in general as this negative, shady force that's trying to influence games, and they see that as a way in which gaming journalists are influenced in certain ways. To them, feminism is this force that's directly manipulating games journalists.

Just you wait, m8. Soon they'll be getting the guillotines out.

It didn't seem that way back when we were doing shit like funding TFYC's charity game jam thingy. It really could have gone a different way, with actual feminists and gamers side by side against these sociopaths and their sex-for-ratings system. But hey, that's what happens when the gamergate shit got forced off /v/ and onto /pol/ and then off to a relatively unregulated imageboard. It could have gone a lot different. It could have gone a lot better. The mods could have gone to delete posts advocating the stalking and harassing of individual feminists and those who are on the sidelines and crossfires. But nope.

Killer Lettuce !!iNo3FkiZx replied with this 12 years ago, 16 minutes later, 1 day after the original post[^] [v] #507,318

@previous (HaikerensGuide !dBGi/iH4eY)
Yeah, the TFYC thing was a great start for it. It was a legitimate defense against the inevitable accusations of sexism, and neatly exposed Quinn and her crazed SJWs for what they really are. But then it all got mass-censored and the actual sexism wasn't reigned in (and perhaps couldn't have been), so all of that was forgotten. As I said, just the fact it pertained to a woman with a big SJW following and lots of influence may have doomed it from the start, really.

The Escapist had a good thread going about it, btw. Was, as far as I know, the only major gaming site to let discussion on it continue. But obviously they weren't enough to help GamerGate's image.

Hopefully, someday there'll be another scandal in gaming journalism that people can get riled up about and use to promote some positive change. One that doesn't involve a woman fucking reviewers, since that doesn't seem to go too well.

I feel there is another chance, but it cannot be under the gamergate name. Perhaps the dissenting former GGfags and feminists who are against journalism but are not for this OWS-like descent into MRA chaos. And perhaps it could happen during the TFYC game jam.

And I feel the incident with women fucking reviewers could have been handled quite differently. Instead of shaming the woman for having sex, we could instead shame the men who had sex with her in exchange for giving her higher ratings on her game. Shame the ones who demand sex for higher ratings on the game of female indie devs. THAT could have been the gamergate. Holy fuck, so much potential still.
