After years as young-un opening various Incandescent bulbs or vacuum tubes, it really does amaze me that they last years in a automobile enviro.

Currently am baby sitting a Retired parked NASA GEO Satellite which with NASA's help I password protected broke in2 - Charged the batteries from worn out with lots of holes n solar panels - Stabalization devices worn out Gyros are sticky as shit - couple of important fly wheels are total frozen locked up - Got past all that real fast and the Achilles heel are the banks of TWTs Traveling wave vacuum tubes
Things are bulky n take a lot of power to heat up the incandescent filament (in one figure called the cathode) Just like your 3157 when heated to max a mass of electrons n photons are produced - Mass of heat goes to total waste with a few photons to make light - Light useless in vacuum tubes so it the mass of electrons that are pulled and directed by internal magnetic fields and tiny metal plates to direct like a fine beam along the tube and end up producing a powerful Radio Frequency microwave output - Each wood make a terrific Microwave oven nor am I kidding - They as any bulb do not like Shock and in space shock is thermal - Hot and cold cycles tend to be the untimate cause of Rear turn signal bulb as well as Space based Vacuum tubes and there is the wear out factor - That rear turn signal was getting dimmer n dimmer over tyme
My baby sitting continues for a few days because the Mars rover this Satellite is helping act as a relay station to off load busy ground based receiver dishes in Perth Australia - The old TWT's have been arching out shorting out the whole Satellites power supply n tripping circuit breakers all over the internal guts - Have gone through 7 TWT's as now total dead ducks and am on 8th which so far is holding up - Have backed off power output to absolute minimum to keep battery drain down and keep TWT from sparking over and taking out all the internal guts again. Mars rovers take hours/days apparently to UP Load lots of video data and sensor data - Its an area I have almost no expertise in (The Rovers that is) All for free as NASA has no money to pay anyone on the outside anymore
Have mass of Globalstar assets helping but not a lot given most frequencies not compatable and not anyone I can send to borrow equipment from Parks observatory as I used to when I lived in Australia to play games in prep for Satellite launches using borrowed stuff -

So this is kinda the basic control schematic - lacks a lot of detail but its basic to all in Space and notice that shut down circuit and comp circuit and Cathode error control loop?
Its all kinda a dance with multiple loops and not shown so much are added spark detectors for real cause it takes not much in space to get a spark ARC Over from the ultra high voltages n that schematic shows 4000 volts but the NASA oldy uses 12,000 ACCEPT such proper voltage is now not so much which is truly not so good in making it work at Frequency its supposed to work at (Tube runs as a wave guide) and on its own does have much to do with frequency values but NOT if voltages is to low and Mode shifts and tube on own goes crazy wacko and arcs over sparks out n what a mess it makes up in Space
