I have a friend possibly going into one for a week or two, and I'm curious as to what generally goes on at them...

My mother is Staff Nurse at a mental hospital.

Basically, it involves a lot of one on one time. Initially, it's an interview (per se) to see what care the person needs.
Then, after that, so starts the treatment. Sessions like group or one and one counselling. Then medication if required.
Without giving too much away, what is your friend going in there for? Has he been 'sectioned'?

ah, that's an informative answer. Thank you.

They're possibly going in because of numerous suicide attempts and repeated acts of self-harm, even while at a regular hospital for other reasons. the doctors are considering sending them to a mental hospital for a week or so hoping it will help.

Maybe you should give us some indication of the area your friend is in, so that someone might better answer your question, OP. Laws and regulations about facilities, care, and treatment differ all over the world.

It's more of an assessment period, but don't tell your friend that. In that time, the doctors/RMA's/Staff Nurse's will find out why this person is self harming. It will be a very friendly environment where (hopefully) your friend can open up.

A week is not an awful lot to help, but your friend has done the right thing by going to the doctor.

They won't be medicated as self harm is not really something that can be cured by drugs. Maybe AD's along the line, but clearly the issue of why has to be addressed first.

I'm in Newcastle in the UK.

They don't want to go exactly. They'll be forced to go if they do end up going.
This will be their second time going. They went two years ago for reasons not really disclosed to me. All they said is that it made them worse.

This person sees me as the only reason they're still alive, so I know a lot about why they do it. To be honest, I'm the only thing that stops them from doing it more. They decided to not talk to me today to see if they could go one day without me, because they wouldn't be able to see me at the mental hospital, and they said it was too hard for them.

You can still visit them in the hospital. Also, I doubt they will get sectioned unless they're suicidal.

And most likely, the reason it didn't work for your mate last time, was because it is very invasive and it might of been daunting opening up like that.

I don't really live close enough to visit. I speak to them mostly online because we don't meet as much as we used to since I moved further away.

Excuse me, but what does 'sectioned' mean?

I believe they mentioned it was hard for them to open up last time. My friend told me I was the first person they opened up to about everything.

It's when you're ordered by court to be placed in the care of a mental health hospital, which they don't really do for self harmers unless they're very prolific.

It's pretty quick. Hours maybe. And judging from what my mum has told me at how they have to act around people, your friend probably found it all too much with the very personal questions.

I appreciate your concern for your friend, but the info I'm giving you is only 3rd hand knowledge. My advice is looking on an NHS related forum and asking. I'd hate to think that some of the things I am telling you are misleading or incorrect.

You aren't giving me very specific information, just general knowledge which I don't know. What you're saying is fine.

I really hope they're just questioning them or something, not already taking them away. but it's nearly midnight, so I doubt they'd be questioning at this hour...

I don't think they'll do good in a mental hospital. They won't sleep. They only fall asleep talking to me. Otherwise, they don't sleep at all.

Dude, this is about their mental wellbeing. Whatever is happening at the moment, is in their best interest.

My advice is, if you know where they live specifically, then ring around the mental hospitals around their area. The staff won't give you specifics, just if that they're ok.

And their stuff will stay at their domicile. Somehow, I think you're talking about a teenage female. If that's the case, then she'll be interviewed by a very friendly person.

They didn't get sent off yet. They were arguing with a nurse about going and had to be restrained for a bit. They were told they'll get a minimum of a day's warning before being sent off. They still aren't sure if they will be, yet, but they're going to try not to be. I'm hoping that they might be able to make a case to be allowed to communicate with me for certain hours while there if they do get sent off. I'm trying to make them less against the idea of going, because it will be helpful.

This is pretty much what it is like compared to this @68,398 (E) in the U.S.

I beleive you Anon E, but it might differ from hospital to hospital. I have plenty of stories about the one I was in...and it is NOT fun by any means. I want to kick those stupid kids that write on their DA about how suicidal they are and how they want to be in an institution.

Okay, let me start with this: No privacy at all.

I refer them as "bouncers"...because they are big black guys...but they are just ward workers that keep things in check (I'm not sure what the proper name is).

They watch you constantly, down to the point of sleeping, taking a shower, and peeing/pooping. The bathroom has no door, and the shower only has a glass door for them to stand outside and watch you.

You are allowed to wear your own clothes, but before you do...a family member has to bring them. The nurses/doctors go through each article of clothing and pick and choose what is "safe" for you to wear...so you only get half of what they bring in. Also, say good bye to your shoe laces.

If you have one of those shower puff things? They are not allowed either! You may untie the knot in them and choke yourself with it (bullshit, that shit would snap before you could get it tight enough).

They will drug the shit out of you, even for self-harmers and suicidies. They give you your pills in a little cup and watch you take them. They then tell you to lift your tongue to make sure you are not hiding them under it, and then they put gloves on and put their fingers in your mouth to check your inner cheeks.

You also have to have blood tests twice a week (I assume to check your levels and due to the drugs).

It's a lot like prison, too. At random times, the bouncers will come in and go through all your shit and flip your mattress to make sure you are not hiding anything. This includes food (they seriously control everything).

A lot of the women would hide the packets of crackers and cookies in their bras for later, but you are only allowed to have food in the dining room...which is a locked off section that only gets opened three times a day for the main meals. Oh...and there's a bell that rings to inform everyone that it's meal time where you have to line up against the wall before they unlock the door...much like grammar school.

I never once got 1-on-1 time while I was there. Once a week I would get a "depression check" with a doctor and a nurse in a private room. The rest of the time it was group, group, group, and church. I'm not kidding, they had a priest come in...and everyone was obsessed with God.

They force you to do the group therapy and activities (such as arts and crafts and karaoke). I hated this bullshit, and eventually I would stop going because I would use that time to try and sleep since you have roommates from hell (loud snorers, and even a woman that would have sex with her husband on family visiting day).

The bouncers would scream and yell at me. They got in my face as if I were in the military. I ignored them. The one guy picked me up and carried me over to karaoke, roughly flopping me in the chair and then blocked the door.

This behavior from me continued, so I was punished then. They put you on display for everyone to see if you are bad. They have another small locked room that was just four white walls. The door had a nice big window in it. Within that room was "the cage". They inject you with shit that pretty much makes you like a full-on-zombie, except worse as you are unable to move. They then sit you down in the cage for whatever time they see fit...and the rest of the ward is allowed to come up to that room and look in at you.

Dealing with your fellow loonies is not fun either. There was "Crazy Carol" who never shut up. She was speaking Bible verses non stop. There was "Jubilant Jew", a 16 year old kid that thought every day was The Sabbath....hmm...I forget rapist guy's name, but he was a 20-some year old that was hitting on all the females of the ward, threatening to rape them. Due to this, he was going to get transferred to an even worse institution in some other state, where he then threatened to kill everyone in the ward...and he was put in the cage and then removed.

People also smell really bad, as a lot of them don't shower due to having to be watched.

They do really stupid shit like "The Easter Tree"...we had a fake x-mas tree up in April (remember now, shower scrunches are NOT SAFE, but it's OKAY to have a fake Christmas tree up with wire in it)...where they made us decorate the damn thing.

They gave us little round card stock pieces that we had to draw something "eastery" on and hang up on the tree with colorful string. I drew a Satanic pentagram with Baphomet over it and caused a panic in the ward...where I then got my notebook and pen taken away from me as punishment so that I could not draw or write in general anymore...which was the only thing keeping me sane.

From the experiences my mother has shared with me, nothing like that happens in UK hospitals. Mainly because of all the law and stipulation surrounding the treatment of patients within NHS care.

Get up, sit in garden or rec room all day apart from meals. You get herded up about 10pm for meds, then bed. You can stay up reading and so forth, but the nurses and orderlies dont really like you being in communal areas at that time. Its pretty laidback and low-key, providing youre not a raving lunatic.
Oh and you are allowed visitors at any time, and can usually get out for the day if you have someone to supervise.

Also, they aren't allowed electronic means of communication, correct? Would they ever make exceptions to this for a person if there was a good reason?

TinyBBS ate my last post, so this will be short and curt.
I slept in a 3 walled cubicle with a curtain for the fourth wall. Reasonable privacy except an orderly would peek in once an hour. No biggie.
Phones, yes; Chargers, no. Staff take those as they can be used for hanging.
Counselling is basic talking therapy; useless imo, but perhaps other people respond better.
To be honest, the time in the ward was the best holiday of my life. It did the world of good for me. I am not a headcase now.

And would they be allowed to be charged away from the patient? Like, in an office separate or something?

Thanks for your help. I appreciate it.

I am sure an iPod is okay. Its just the charging thing -- staff take charge of these, so you have to take it to them to be charged; they give it back when asked.
I had 2 counselling sessions in 2 weeks -- but I was low status. Its possible your mate might have to have more.
You really dont have to worry, it is probably the best place for them, and its not like the films -- it is not isolation at all. There are even usually sessions available for the internet.

I guess the big thing here for me is whether or not they'll be allowed/able to contact me. The mental health bloke at the regular hospital said they wouldn't be allowed any communication like iPods and such because it would 'interfere with treatment'. But from what you've said, that may not be the case...

Sorry to keep bothering you with questions, but what do they do when you first get there? Let's say they are allowed to contact me: How long might it be after they arrive before they could actually do so. I know it varies, but would it be after an interview or whatever?

The iPod thing? well, I was allowed a phone, dont see what the difference is really with an iPod.
They will be evaluated immediately -- i doubt any access would be restricted, within reason. Basically a doc or psych will talk to her and evaluate what drugs are to be taken during her stay

The people at the regular hospital were, in fact, lying wankstains. They are able to contact me.

They're very restraint-happy there. They grabbed my friends arms and hit them in the back and stomach as 'restraint'. They refused to eat this morning, and got pissed about them forcing them to but they didn't show their anger. The orderlies decided that that was a good time for more 'restraint', which did make my friend visibly angry. They proceeded to throw them to the floor and kick them and hit them with a baton thing. My friend is 5'2' and is underweight. This is too much force for someone who wasn't even a threat to themselves or anyone else. They could have found a calmer way to do this.

Also, they refuse to disclose the name of the centre.

It's very unrealistic.

You are being lied to, a MASSIVE amount there. Like I said, my mother is a RSN. You are NOT ALLOWED to do that type of stuff to a patient. Force feeding is against the law (if you don't believe me, feel free to research any British prisoners on hunger strike). Also, a fucking baton? Are you kidding me? That is an offensive weapon that if seen on sight by any mental health professional, it would be confiscated, the member of staff suspended and then the future of their job would be decided by a panel board.

I think it's quite upsetting that your friend has to lie to make the hospital that's trying to help them, seem like an evil entity, which of course is making you upset as you are far away and can't do anything.

But I promise you now, the things they are saying are a COMPLETE lie.

It's not like they're trying to make it sound bad. They have nothing but praise for the counsellor and they're working on anger management by letting them burn things out in the grounds. The restraint shit is the only real negativity they talk about...
I'll take what you're saying, though. I'm not going to call them out on it, but I'll definitely keep it in mind on anything else they mention about it..

Also, why would they not tell the patient where the facility is or what it's called? their roommate doesn't even know, and they have been there a long time..

Again, more lies. There is no possible reason for them not to know what it's called. Failing that, how hard is it to ask someone else, other than their roommate.

Your naivety into such disgraceful lack of human rights within British Mental Hospitals, is quite upsetting.

Your friend seems like they're going through typical attention seeking behavior. I bet they got the exact response they required when they told you those things?

Sorry, I am more curious than anything about what they're saying :/ I have no idea about any of this...

I responded by telling them to ask someone else. They've never been the attention-seeking type :/

Don't apologise, I know you're only concerned for your friend.
Just take what they say with a pinch of salt. Lying is a common factor with some mental health issues, i'm sorry to say.

One thing they've never actually done is lie to me. They've concealed things, but never outright told a lie. I guess that's what made me worried about what they're saying...

They asked the counsellor where they are, and he told them 'it'd be best if you didn't know'.
No idea what the fuck that's supposed to mean.

Also, they said the people doing it were just dressed really plainly in white. Orderlies, basically. They're talking about it with their counsellor tomorrow...
