AND That article points to Champagne French only!!!
> pinot noir and pinot meunier – and one white grape – chardonnay, which is also used to make white wine.

That is Champagne made under strict French laws. Even the California so called Champagne's and there are many of high quality BUT they do not meet the French law requirements of Grapes used.

So even when a fully owned by the French California Champagne maker (they usually try and drop off the champagne from title and call it sparking wine and still charge $18+ bucks/bottle

That wine may NOT contain the Red Pinot Noir. Great wines but Grapes from Napa or Sonoma grow in rich soil rather then the lean mean soil of France which makes for Super wine but it ain't really the real Champagne from France -

tl;dr

Champagne from French Great; from anywhere else may be adequate, but may also not be as good for heart as the real deal

Matt knows more about wine than you do. He is a connoisseur while you just type shit into google, read the first result, and pretend it is your opinion.

Hey my reply was accurate + I spent of my own cold hard cash a lot of it taking classes on wine and with a wine class traveling to Germany Italy Australia Chile Napa Sonoma county - the Central Coast of Calif and of course France France and more France. Travel was mostly with a now passed away teacher n Wine writer for the LA Times - Robert Lawrence Balzer and damn a quick check of wiki n it says
"has been called the first serious wine journalist in the United States"

If you pull up a photo of him and compare to Robert Mondavi, they look like brothers - they attended UC Davis at same tyme same classes and Balzer majored in English and Mondavi? I forget so look it up

Anyway the advantage of travel with a famous wine writer is is - We as class were treated as Royalty by owners of Champagne Bordeaux - You name it we for just a few thousand per trip ended up OFTEN with a case of this and a case of that at our doorstep when arriving home which was ALWAYS worth more then cost of trip =.

tl;dr so please stop reading this

For example in Cognac Hennessy took down each of our birthdays and then brought out Cognac still in huge glass jugs saved for blending (out of oak on purpose after a few years) and then we each tasted that single Copper still Brandy and then shared each others birthday example - Then Hennessy took us to where they make barrels from scratch - Studied the Oak - the aged piles out for rain sun for a few years after cutting and then watched people make a total barrel - AND THEN Hennessy took us to a tiny farm with just one Copper still - their most fav provider of something special to blend

Then onto Martell the same day - days of Cognac and days of Bordeaux - Dinner on the winery and lots of dinners hosted by wine makers at 4 star French restaurants.

Oh and at a class in Los Angeles each week one was poured from brown paper bags about 12-16 different wines each week and one spent the first hour while in lecture only allowed to sniff each wine and make notes and THEN one had to guess wot was in the glass. One learned how to sort Zins from Pinots from Cab Sav (Bordeaux) and the blends very very many weeks months years to be able to do that

Class even used by wine makers to in same way decide on if a blend should go to market or make changes - One year a French owned house in Napa did not agree with class - next year they paid our way with apology and agreed we were spot on and they fugged up -

But I also learned a major lesson - wot I like? Maybe more French oak then American in Chardonnay - other classmates wanted less oak and more steel or no oak at all.

Takes a village

But if you are n my hood and want to taste a 40 60 year old wine drop on by and ask - BUT DO NOT NOT NOT do wot a gal I new did - at a party I open a very rare bottle of Bordeaux probably worth in the $800++ and she has a rose in glass cause at party I do have a range of wot people want even if its not to my taste cept I sure had the best Rose avail - She has 1/4 glass left and grabs the bottle and pours in to full the super great Bordeaux - Susan is a wonderful friend but she is never ever going to be in the company of a rare wine I pour again and of course she hated that blend she made

Not sweet LOL

Y'know, I've always found it kinda weird how the French can dictate to the rest of the world who can use the word "champagne". I mean, there's a village in Switzerland actually called Champagne; the EU has already forbidden them using the word to describe their locally produced wines; are they going to order them to rename the town next?

The French can't dictate the name of French fries. When George W. Bush led the U.S. into the Iraq War, some Americans renamed french fries to freedom fries.

The French also suck at war. They got their ass kicked by the Germans in World War I, and they got their ass kicked by the Germans again in World War II. I'm not sure if there is a worse country in battle. Perhaps the Italians. I heard their army sucked cock too.
