After I get out of the shower, I towel dry until it is mildly moist, and then I follow up by blowdrying and combing it so it goes straight and soft. If something happens and I can't get it straight even with blowdrying (or I want it really straight), I will straighten it.

You should do more with it. Perhaps a conditioning each morning followed by some hair crème to hold it in to a particular style? They make styling crème specifically for that 'shaggy, unkempt' look.

Also, towel drying can leave some sticking up ends. You should partially blowdry it to give it a smooth, straight look.

Nah. My hair is sufficiently oily that it is never, ever dry. Conditioner would just make it greasy as fuck.
