If you were expecting Matt, well, now you just look foolish.So, recently started at university, and a laptop would be very helpful for taking notes, doing work on, and playing games while I'm on the train.
Ideally, it'd be a manageable size and priced reasonably. Also, performance for the games isn't too important. I'd probably only play less technically demanding games like grand strategies or older games.
Does MC know of anything that meets these requirements?

i have one. it can be frustrating. the keyboard is necessary. stuff like excell works on it, but inputing on it can be a challenge. get a wireless mouse too.
probably any laptop would suit your needs better... i basically use mine next to my computer so i can chat and google stuff while i'm using my main screen for something i don't want to minimize.

i use my chromebook for that, and it's quite a bit cheaper probably!

My advice is to buy a decent used laptop that will meet your needs. Have a price and general specs in mind rather than a specific laptop. I've got older laptops that I still use fairly often and I get by just fine with them. I don't need the power that an expensive new laptop has. You'll get something you can be totally happy with for just few hundred bucks if you're patient and shop around.
Chromebooks are pretty sweet if you're comfortable with Linux.

Update: my mum (of all people) pointed out that I can just use a handheld console for gaming on the train, meaning that the laptop can just be some sort of netbook.Thanks for the advice anywaay, though, Minichanners.

Me either, ha. I've used Linux off and on forever, but I still have to Google everything every time I run into the slightest problem, or forget how to do something. Honestly though, if you're just gonna be doing basic stuff like surfing the web, taking notes or even writing papers, Linux should not be a problem at all for you.
On the other hand if you use Google docs you could just leave the Chrome OS on a Chromebook, there is no simpler OS than that. I was skeptical about the Chromebooks until I played with one, I'd seriously get one for myself just to do the kind of stuff you're talking about if I had the cash. They are the perfect balance between a tablet and full blown laptop.

it's not so great as a tablet either. overcomplicated. honestly they should have just focued on streaming your pc to a tablet and just made a tablet that could operate as a computer screen for your desktop. that would be more useful than just another functionally limited pseudo-laptop.

That would be useful, but it's called remote desktop. It's probably present, but most remote desktop solutions currently existing are limited by latency and quality of the network. Within your lan you can get a relatively smooth experience, but outside it? No way with an (american) residental connection.

In comparison to "real" consoles and PCs, yes, but it should serve my purposes well enough. All I need is something to help keep me occupied on the train journey.
Fuck, might just pick up those 3DS remakes of Pokemon Ruby and Saphire. I did enjoy those as a kid.

can you remote desktop with a surface? that could actually be usefull... i just mean something like nvidea shield or something purpose built, not just streaming or remote desktop as an afterthought or as a toy for kids.

It runs windows, right? So I don't see why not. There's probably a remote desktop client already installed and available, or otherwise in the store. Note that microsofts' remote desktop works quite badly with most games, and that you can only have remote desktop active OR be using the computer. It won't attach as a "second screen" or anything like that.

oh. well that's kinda lame. i used to remote desktop from work to spook my girlfriend by stealing her mouse or by turning on the sterio. i guess it has other uses, but i'd prefer it if it... worked better. i just want a tablet i can use as an extension of my pc desktop, but stuff like that wouldn't sell more copies of windows... no, we need windows in a whole new form factor.

Here's what I ended up buying, btw. It's an Asus tablet of some kind, with a keyboard attachment. It's pretty great, fits easily into my bag and had Office pre-installed. It's like having a tiny PC I can take anywhere, it's bloody top.It's on Windows 8 though, so I had to tweak it a bit to filter out the annoying Metro interface. But now it's just like a regular desktop computer.

Nice, I hope that works out for you. For the kinds of things you want to do I think it'd be pretty much perfect. If it's bluetooth capable you could probably rig up a PS3 controller for emulation and such.

I have friends from Qualcomm who attended the MS show today and they confirmed that the START Menu is BACK. And that this time 10 is designed to please Win 7 users instead of driving them mad for them who converted to 8 AND Then were so angry MS shifted gears to start a way to save something they could get no one to buy - Much like Vista. 8.1 may not have a Start menu but its 10,000% better then 8.0
I am on the list for the OCT developers release of Win 10 but doubt I will get client approval so I probably will have to wait just like everyone else. Buildings almost within running distance from where I live have many buildings spread out all over Mira Mesa with Win 10 running but mostly on cell phones and tablets and other hand held things. I can get my hands on those and bring them home but alas cannot connect to WiFi or net without multiple permissions.

I think for gaming I'll stick to simple PC stuff, for now. Thinking of getting Fallout 2 on there, maybe a Total War game. Though... Getting an Ape Escape or older Ratchet and Clank on there would be pretty awesome.
