I don't even have a 3DS but I know that the charger is the same as the DSi charger. You don't have to use the dock, you can use your old chargers if you have them.

Nintendo knows what they are doing. The 3DS includes a bunch of built in games that seem quite fun. They are also trying to avoid a shortage of hardware available, so this plan will work nicely. Only the hardcore nintendo fans will buy at launch, leaving them time to ramp up production abd shippIng for later in spring when the games come.
Also I checked out the demo unit at best buy and I am impressed. I will probably try to get one in a few months when the flood of games and apps happens.
