I went to a bar last night with people twice my age and I got drunker than I've ever been in my life and then the bar closed, causing me to have to drive home drunk. No one was hurt but I almost ran over a pedestrian. Should I be forgiven? I feel like such a dumb ass which I should because I always said I would never drink and drive.

My story. Long ago invited to a party but needed to drive a mountain road to get there.
Drank to much at party and on way home at at edge of cliff stopped with car bumper pushed just a bit in2 telephone pole.
Could NOT get my finger between pole n bumper. Lesson learned and have been very very careful and have called a cab or crashed at home of party or even 2-5 tymes got a hotel room to stay over night until sober.
OP lessons are good - Do as I did and re-think NEXT TYME cause for sure there will be more Next Tymes

My only choice was to take a bus, which I didn't have money for. Not everyone lives in a big city where there are lots of nice people willing to do stuff for free.

Dude. Bus drivers are absolutely fine taking people who don't have fare money. Ask nicely and you'll be granted a ride. I did that all the time.

Maybe bus drivers there are, but try that in, say, New York or Chicago, and they will yell you off the bus.

In French Louisiana, people drive drunk all the time, and they have no problems, even if police see them.

Try doing that in any US city, lol. The fat black female drivers are the worst. Few years ago i saw some Hispanic lady with two kids pay for herself and the older child. She claimed the other kid was 3yo, at that age they can ride for free. Black bus driver yells at her and tells her she's lying, then throws her off the bus, and this was after the woman had already paid.
