The Linux wonder patch, better rendering engines for my browser, and other useful software patches are making my really fucking old computer run faster and faster.

Not at all. I installed Gentoo Lunix on a 1996 Packard Bell with a 433MHz Pentium and now I can enjoy 1080p Blu-ray movies and I get 86FPS in Grand Theft Auto IV (running at 1920x1080, all graphics options maxed out).
