Oh. So minecraft doesn't have a good enough simulation of sex, basically.

No lol, you can do many things with SL. For example, I ran a Harry Potter role playing sim on SL that was great - no sex involved.

Decentralized servers, you can pick your own group of people. If you dislike them, you just go to another server and start over with very little penalty. Has an actual goal besides socializing and spending real-life money to buy in-game stuff, which is building stuff and making it look nice. Minecraft is a trillion times more accessible for young people, it's goal is not the socializing but it supports it because you can work together (or not) on multiplayer.
Roleplaying requires a lot of effort on the player to be made fun, most (younger) people won't be up for that and instead just want to build. They're not really similar at all in this aspect.

Ok, fair enough. But Minecraft graphics suck.

Kinda true, but mostly irrelevant. They are different from what you're used to, and they're not as smooth as AAA games (which don't feature world building anyway). The game is however basically legos, so everything is made up out of small blocks. These small blocks all have their distinct graphics, and putting them together gives unique looks. This is what a lot of people like, the smoothness or whatever of the graphics don't really matter to them, it's just like a different art style.
As always, gameplay is infinitely more important than the graphics if you want to keep playing something. The graphics may put you off at first, but if the gameplay draws you in you won't notice the graphics anymore after a short while.

Ok. But can you roleplay in Minecraft?
Anonymous F replied with this 12 years ago, 2 minutes later, 3 hours after the original post[^][v]#497,558

Yes. A suprising amount of people do it, personally I have not. There's plenty of people roleplaying in vanilla minecraft simply using character skins, and text. There's also some more advanced servers that run server-side plugins, or require client-side plugins to achieve certain graphical/gameplay/whatever effects.
Another point to note is that minecraft is ridiculously moddable. You can do a lot with this silly little game, and you don't have to pay linden dollars for anyone to do it.

What are you doing, man? You're not meant to come to some reasoned understanding when presented with evidence! This is completely off the rails!

Yo KL > reasoned understanding when presented with evidence!
One day I will get the tyme as well as the nerve to hit GoKunming and post in open and ask people who work/live/there WHY they chose a city that by their own admission is not on anyones list of places for expats to work/live. They as a group even present their own evidence.
This may appear tangential but back at my very first Comic Con I was invited to a wedding by a couple I had just met that very day and THEY Met on Second Life. One year later at Comic Con I ran in2 them and asked them if they were still playing Second Life and they said they had moved on to Minecraft.
Me? Arcade games I still enjoy when I am out n about and will never get tired of a Pin Ball machine YET YET I can afford to buy a machine or three for home use and even have some room but notice I keep saying I want to buy but never DO.
Games people play and the tyme to play vs playing in R/L. But hey games are cool. Locally here many a surfer works for either Bio-Med - Wireless someThing or other like Qualcomm or so many other choices around here OR Games lots n lots of people employed in the Game business. And of course them who rite code for dis n dat n get paid more then OK for such.

i was a dictator in minecraft once. i had a city. i had followers. i had everything. it was great. Then we were TnT cannoned and our homes were destroyed. We had to go on the run, living in ravines and small holes in the ground. It was terrible. But we all kept up our spirits. Ryan built glowstone farms and Falco designed our floor patterns. it was "nice."
And yes, we did fight back. We cannoned our enemies back and burned their castle with Lava and griefed them into rage quitting. I rebuilt our city, bigger and better than ever, with water walls for protection from cannons and huge mines for Becky to dig for diamonds to make pants and helmets. once we rebuilt our fortress we were attacked again and we retaliated by obliterating large swaths of land and PvPing every player we saw. Fake Anon and r04r were the best diplomats i've ever had. r04r, in fact, made Field Marshal. they collected much taxes from the weak and submissive and killed all those who refused and burned their homes down and killed their sheep and stomped on their fields. it was a glorious time.
And then came the dark days, the admin changed the rules and made the server non-PvP and we went on a long exodus looking for a new home.
Though we found a few temporary places to PvP people's dicks into the ground we were on the declining slope of greatness and we never relived our glory days. Then, our greatest enemy, one that seemed to always beat us, reduced our numbers and we were forced to live in a cube in the End a million miles from nothing, hidden, from everyone, and there in the darkness the treachery began.
Ryan burned my house down because i had built it on top of everyone elses and he rage quit after i executed him and killed his dog.
i was surrounded by my own hubris, and i had killed my beloved Ryan... all he ever needed was something.
after that i was a shell of a dictator and Becky and r04r had already started a war of succession when my successful attempts to make us some enemies resulted in what they felt was a failure in leadership when i chose to build our home base in the middle of a PvP battlefield right next to spawn. ever since that moment they became argumentative verging on insubordination. i should have had them executed at the first sign of traitorous plotting, but i needed Becky to mine more Diamonds and for r04r to make good on my threats. So i let them get away with it.
After being forced from our home and into a cube in the End i was virtually powerless.
so i left quietly in the night. I took what i needed, all the diamonds and gold we had accumulated and the food. Also everything else i could carry of value. I built a small ship and sailed far into the sea until i came across a small island, a beautiful land filled with lavender flowers and trees and white beaches and animals of every kind. I buried my belongings in a hole and logged out, never to play minecraft again.
Can you do THAT is second life?
