Topic: Serious question about US police.

Anonymous A started this discussion 12 years ago #36,352

It seems like every other day there is a new story or video about cops shooting and killing unarmed adults and children, cops beating up people for no reason, throwing old ladies to the ground, using military tanks and ballistic armor, teargassing journalists and destroying their equipment, threatening to kill people, etc. If this were happening in, say, an African nation, what would most Americans think of that nation? Would they call it a "third world police state," or a "fascist state?"

America is becoming a police state, which is simply the end result of statism, whether it be called communism or fascism or anything else. Both major political parties in the US support the increase of police power and the erosion of civil liberties. It proceeds under Obama the same as it did under Bush or Clinton.

Agreed.

@496,155 (B)
And that is why it is happening.

nah. millions of people interact with the cops every day and they take their ticket orthey accept their arrest and go peacefully. a very very tiny fraction of interactions end up like OP said. and some of those are entitled old women who refuse to accept their arrest and get body slammed.some are kids who run or try to fight or argue and they get shot or tackled and hurt.

only the tiniesy of fractions are "bad cops" overstepping the law, but those make the largest headlines and get blown up into huge media nightmares.

this is not as big a problem as some people would make it out to be.

At what point would a healthy, fit adult male with a belt full of weapons need to body-slam an old lady? You best be trolling.

Very true. The media can really distort things.

That's why you've got people who have this absurd fear of all cops.

when she refuses to cooperate and physically resists. what is a cop going to do? beg her to comply? no, you take her to the ground, wrap up her arms, cuff her, and force her to stop resisting.

i.e. don't fuck with cops who have the authority to make you comply. if you do you're asking for a dislocated shoulder.

@OP
Your father went to prison and you've probably been given a good amount if disorderly conduct tickets for being drunk in public. No wonder you hate the police.
