I am indeed not a DJ but I've experimented with it.

Hipsters DJ because it's a way for them to pretend to be involved in music without being mentally and dextrously burdened by the actual process of creating music.
Consider this when you consider the tendency for hipsters to own macintosh computers, all of which seem to come with Garage Band by default. That's right, they could easily pick up some instruments and play every part in a song themselves - even a cover - and put it together so it sounds half decent, but instead they DJ.
