It appears that Archimedes assembled a group of soldiers with polished shields into a large parabola shape and then focused the reflection from their shields onto the rigging of the ships and igniting them.
A test in the 1970s proved that it was possible to do this.

But nobody is claiming that the 'science project' foam is lava. The project simply demonstrates what happens when a volcano erupts. And lava is just molten rock. He made lava from the rock, not the mud.
