Something I hear a lot is that people never change. People seem to judge lazy people as being permanently lazy. But I'm a lot more productive than I used to be, and I think it's because I am doing something I like and am good at now. Whereas before I was just going through the motions. But is this just a phase, and I'll go back to being lazy?

I don't think there's a single "work ethic" quantifier. You'll be more motivated to work on something you care about, and less for something you don't care about. You may care for something because you personally do, or because you're being paid to do so and need the money, but still in the end I feel like people will only work hard if they care, and if they don't care they get lazy.

I've always been pretty lazy, but still did all right. It's hard to forgive myself for being that way for so long.
I think peoples work ethic can definitely change but I don't think it has anything to do with the type of work or if you are getting paid for it.
I'm more willing to believe a persons environment and current frame of mind play a huge factor on their work ethic.
