I think some of them are actually a little gay themselves. I've known a few guys who were almost obsessed with anti-gay stuff. There's gotta be some reason the whole idea affects them so much.

There was a study I was reading before where straight men's brainwaves were measured while they watched gay porn. Those who identified themselves as homophobes responded positively (i.e. They received enjoyment) to the gay porn while others didn't. It's all about denial.
