It is commonly used and thus there should be new grammar rules added to the Queen's English for the usage of the shorthand phrase 'lol'.

It's getting ridiculous.

Like...

- lol should always be lowercase or uppercase
- lol should always be outside of a sentence either before or after
- lol does not require a period at the end
- when used with a single word for a short phrase, the period is optional
