Topic: How do religious people deal with this?

Found this amusing picture whilst out surfing the non-Minichan part of the Internet. But I think that it raises an interesting question, how do religious people reconcile their god's supposed benevolence with the harsh punishment that the same god gives for a person not worshipping them? Does this not paint god in a somewhat unfavourable light? Making him seem hypocritical if not tyrannical?How do religious people get around this, if at all? My guess is that either some interpret god as more wrathful than benevolent, or simply don't think about if too much. Though maybe there are some that take the view of "as long as you're generally a good person, god lets you into heaven".

Some view hell as a metaphorical separation from God instead of a punishment.

Many think Hell is a place you "send yourself" by rejecting God, as opposed to being sent there by Him. Catholicism teaches this, and it's probably the largest of the 'camps' regarding this. It neatly sidesteps the issue.
Others don't see Hell as a place of physical torture, but a 'spiritual' state. Some others believe Hell to be a temporary place before you're either destroyed entirely (annihilationism), or reconciled with God (universal reconciliation).
I have no idea about Judaism, but I think Islam (or Islamic scholars) hold an annihilationist approach, i.e. you go to Hell for whatever period proportionate to your sins.

i wouldn't call myself a scholar, becky, but i'll give it a whirl.
so jew are all like, show me the money, right? so like for them, hell is a giant rip off. everything is low quality and over priced and no one haggles. it's like the Gap but there's no discount rack.

Hmm. So with that belief, god is blameless in people going to hell? Sounds about right for the sterner side of Christianity, I suppose.
The other ones don't seem to really get around the issue, but are interesting nonetheless, I suppose. I had not heard of those beliefs, before.

Jesus taught that when the veil is pulled back (aka END OF TIMES) those souls in hell must only ask to come into the kingdom of heaven and they will be taken.
