Topic: Police officers getting paid under the table
beckyderp !8ElfFaoFao started this discussion 12 years ago#35,902
I understand that a lot of the off-duty work (directing traffic for construction companies, checking IDs for bars, etc.) is tax-free, under-the-table shit.
How much does this piss you off? It REALLY bothers me. They get to use their taxpayer-funded uniforms, cars, etc. to violate the law, and then go beat minorities on their way home. :(
I've met a decent cops and it was very refreshing. But most cops are shit people, bullies with badges.

They're often okay when they're new, then they turn into shitheads.

See the 2 above comments for why UK police are grate, and yours suck. Thanks.

Both those posters hate America, so really their opinion doesn't count thanks.

You might be onto something, two of the cool ones I've met were younger. I'm not excusing any of the bad shit cops do, but for many of them it can't be an easy job. Cops deal with people at their worst day in and day out. Shitty people pissed off at you every day all day has to have an effect.

I've noticed the reverse, a cop that's young and dumb and full of cum, with a gun and something to prove is the fucking worst. Being a police officer is an easy way to get power for morons, and power hungry morons are usually dicks.

I notice that Americans seem to have a thing about hating/disliking their police, and I think that's a shame.

I sometimes wonder whether their police are all as bad as they claim, or if it's just popular to dislike the police in the US. I know there are plenty of incidents of cops misbehaving in America, but with a population of 320,000,000 surely that's to be expected.

I suspect it's the latter. It's probably at least partially the media's fault. I wouldn't be surprised if they enjoyed running lots of stories about bad cops.

Seems like there's cool creed in hating cops there, whether ghetto youths or middle-class pinkos. But also I think that like everything in America, the cops there tend to have disproportionate actions.

Good point. As Brits, your perceptions of American cops are clearly more credible than, you know, Americans'.

But seriously, what do you suppose it is about US cops that make them apparently so much worse than other countries' police? The guns, the culture, poor training, poor relations with the public, etc.? I'm curious.

I think the prevalence of guns among the general public might be a decent part of it. It makes the job considerably more dangerous than in many other countries, forces them to profile more (to keep themselves safe), makes it more stressful, makes it so that intelligent people don't often wake up in the morning and think wow, I should really become a police officer.
