Topic: Super cheap 128GB flash drives

Ks !KansasxqvM started this discussion 12 years ago #35,709

I was shopping for some flash drives today and I saw some 128GB flash drives for $10.99 with free shipping. Price mistake or not I've got deals like this before on Amazon. I obviously can't guarantee anything here, but I ordered 2 of them myself. I'll just use them to back up some unimportant files and expand my Raspberry Pi storage, it'd be hard to go wrong at that price.

They are USB2.0, so im going to go out on a limb here and say probably no faster than 280 Mbit/s.

And I'm going on a limb and say they're likely no faster than 100 Mbit/s for that price, if that even... So yeah.

Micro-sd cards are more mindblowing in that aspect, imo. I have a 64gb one, and it fits on the tip of my finger and has enough storage space to hold thousands upon thousands of books.

I got one, in black since I'm boring, but I almost thought it had a sort of DRM that restricts it's use to 1 or 10 computers.

I hope it works out for ya. The seller has an 87% positive rating it seems like a decent gamble. Speed probably won't be a deal breaker unless it's insanely slow, I'm fairly certain 100 Mbit/s is fast enough to stream 1080p and I transfer most files over network so it's no bother to have shit transferring in the background.

@OP
inb4 it's 128MB flash drive...

Edit: nevermind. All the reviews on Amazon mention a 4GB drive, so it'll be at least that much.

Edit²: now that name brand 128GB drives are under $40, maybe it's not so ridiculous after all. Moore's law continues to amaze.

Bump.

Bought two, received them today.
117GB capacity, 8MB/s write and 14MB/s read.

Not bad at all for $10.

Externally hosted imageI got these in the mail today. 119GB capacity and it took just over a minute to transfer a 700MB file. Unless I'm missing something here this is best deal I've ever got on flash drives. I'm gonna order a few more soon.

I saw TB HDD's for $50 recently.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822236339

They were lower on Amazon at some point.

I remember some guy bought like 10 of these a few years ago and made a very small raid, like the size of an ammo box. It was pretty bad ass. I can't seem to find the project now though.

I remembered wrong, it was a 16TB NAS. Still very cool though. I'd like to have a 1TB dedicated NAS, but I just haven't got around to it. I've got a very mixed setup in my house with different systems in each room that needs something. Someday I'm just gonna unify everything and have a PC everywhere I need one, but money is always a problem for me. http://www.bit-tech.net/news/modding/2010/05/10/black-dwarf-16tb-nas/1

@previous (M)
Are you pleased with it?

Anonymous K replied with this 12 years ago, 2 weeks later, 1 month after the original post[^] [v] #494,521

Okay on second thought, fuck these.

I haven't put these to full use yet but after seeing consistent reviews that they may be spoofed or consistently faulty, I tried to load up a couple 35GB archives of smallish files to one.
Not sure what's wrong, but they're each fatally corrupted in some way. The first I loaded up only has 27 of its 35GB intact which is a lot of shit missing, and the latter won't open at all.
Funnily enough, the small set of images I had on there weren't overwritten or anything and are just fine, but these large archives don't work at all.

$20 experiment so little loss here, but they still won and got my $20.

It's Amazon. Just ask for a refund. They'll give you a refund.

Yup. Turns out the flash drives were programmed to show 128 GB, but are only capable of holding something like 15 GB. I contacted Amazon and got a quick refund and two free flash drives.
