Topic: FAO Syntax: whats the deal with the Ten Myle Falklands obsession?

Metæ started this discussion 12 years ago #35,429

Wouldn't the loss of India or the African colonies (especially Rhodesia) or even Hong Kong be a better example of the British Empire's failure? I mean, they actually kept the Falklands.

I think it's just a part of one of his default settings. He seems to be programmed to interact with other nationalities based on stereotypical assumptions about them. E.g, the assumption that Dutch people will be amused by a picture of wooden clogs, or that an English person will be enraged upon hearing about any loss of the British Empire.

I do have a bug up my ass about the Falklands. Its a loooong story and I need to get my Feet to meet the low Tide feet - nor is it going to bottom out all that low today and shoes from yesterday got full wet cause Eye Candy got in my way on my run.

For me it was the timing of that war. I was in France on a wine tasting trip with friends. I left behind a GF who is a Full on MD Head Shrink - ask for details later but while was on trip and she was at work which was UCLA at tyme nor could change schedule - On trip just as my trip is ending she calls me to tell me she is GETTING MARRIED - GOT That my GF says she is Getting MARRIED.

As I said there is a major back story to this that even ends up on nighty news not that much latter -

So emotionally I was in dumps. Friends all were booked to return home to LA and North Calif and I said I am not going home - Booked a hotel room and walked the city. A bit depressed but no way suicidal.
So I decide to go to the Van Gogh mueseum - get lost on Metro - ask for help and some very cute girls with most excellent English say hey we want to do that with you and they led me to a very nice day and got me out of dumps quickly.

No I was not in mood to hook up - just needed some friendship - So they find out I R engineer and tell me they work at a TV station - Do I want a tour? I say sure got nada planned. They work news in evening so I went with them. Got introduced to boss of news room who says - U Engineer? You know anything about Exocet missile's. If he had asked me about that long list of other missiles except the Hughes TOW Maverick Falcon or Sparrow and frankly, I only had text book knowledge of those just a bit cause I never worked on any o those nor wood!!

But the Exocet was one I had taken a deep Engineering interest for work I was doing at tyme - Parts they used I wanted to use so I had studied every inch inside that French Exocet and had one in my hands (de armed) to really study close up and personal

The day I was on tour was the day after Exocets did wot they do so well. I was not watching news so had no clue but the TV station was in full production of news all about the War and of course that now Famous Missile. He says to me do you want a job? Write a script give us background be our adviser - People who made that weapon wood not go on camera or take phone calls/interviews.

I said er my Visa wood not allow and he said no problem we can take care of that - put you up in vip hotel and pay all expenses and a nice wage. No wanting to go home and new cute girls as friends-

So bottom line is I first got the full, as all could see story about Falklands and you can imagine the Bias the French had towards the Brits and they wanted Falklands to be free. So I ended up with a cause.

Never been to Falklands but made sure on Qualcomm's money, to get a flight over for birds eye view - I could have gone if I had the tyme but really saw from Air nothing that wood intrigue me to visit. Was in Argentina many times for many reasons before and after that war so of course I made sure to bring it up as small talk - In Argentina its never small talk as people in a bar will all gather around to be sure I stay educated about their plight at having not only Islands stolen but that all important OIL - of future Stolen

Now my Feets will meet the Feets of Low Tide

You mean you don't personally become enraged or emotional when someone brings up the Empire your country once had hundreds of years ago?

You telling me they won't?

I have not been to the Falklands, but I've been to Argentinan Patagonia sometimes and there's the slogan "Las Malvinas son Argentinas" all over the place, people are still bitter about it, if the brits take their eyes from there one moment that's all it takes for argentines try and get the island.

Patagonia is an amazing place by the way, both Chile and Argentina...If you lame sheltered nerds ever have the opportunity to travel there you should go. Most foreign tourists there seemed to be german(loads of them), and other american nations, I guess brits are scared of getting beat up by argies if they go there, funny because that region is historically tied to britain, down to settlements where people speak welsh, to lots of english-influenced name places and so on

Wood I visit? Sure of course but wood need a good reason. And as Anon H said Argentinan Patagonia or its really Argentinean/Chile Patagonia which is truly a place all of you should go to - well given if I had say a day to blow on a biz trip it wood be not 2 Falklands given the so many more better choices Argentinian offers. Its not exactly like Falklands is set up for tourists and I suspect they speak with funny Brit accent? No clue

Yea if any of my great Rag Head friends at Qualcomm were to discover I am using such a slur when they clearly told me to say Towel Heads - they b miffed at me. Oh not one of them does do such to head but Sikh's do nor do I call them such names. Very friendly people at peace - Rag Heads as all no are playing havoc with Planet Earth again - Not all of course - just enough to cause total hell on Earth for so many.

So you were sad, wandering around France, hooked up with some young women and then got a job advising the TV news on the Exocet missile, which you knew inside and out? Well that does, at least, explain it.
@487,347 (Killer Lettuce !!iNo3FkiZx)
Makes sense. I always figured he felt a bit of guilt about it, as he was King George VI's advisor on empire policy, and it all fell apart under his watch because he lost a swing dance contest with Mahatma Gandhi...

> at least, explain it.

One of the very unique and I mean never done b4 by USA or Brits was a decision by French to design a missile with OTHER then Mill Spec parts. All 3 countries have a rule that says only approved tyme tested and built just for the Military - Parts can be uses - In short hand its Mill Spec. And there are many good reasons in most cases to do that - BUT it also means one NEVER EVER uses a state of the art part.

Millspec parts are always more bulky heavy or at Least as with IC's VERY Expensive and at the same tyme Yesterdays technology - The French in their wisdom said lets build on the Cheep and use state of the art off the shelf commercial parts. Work I was doing for Gov also avoided Mill Spec at all costs cause in Spy vs Spy biz one wants not only state of the Art - One demands break thru's neve done b4 as in

Does more is smaller then b4 uses less power so it can go remote on say solar cells - You get the drift and parts cost a bloody fortune but in spy biz cost in not important as one has unlimited money.

I was working on Stuff that needed as many non USA made parts as possible that were close to state of art and all of that was designed in a place NOT Saying and built in Egypt Israel Pakistan with them working close very close and most paid for by Saudi Arabia - Some USA made parts France used in Missile were repackaged so no one could c hey made in USA - So basically France did a lot of engineering we ripped off and that included servo motors and circuits and sensors lots of sensors Missiles use but our end products were not related to a Missile

Wish we could because we needed a Sidewinder and that was just not possible - France never had a clue nor wood care for that matter - We bought the Exocet from a 3rd party. French wood care if they thought USA was ripping off designs to copy and build and sell again them but that was not the case.

It was a short term gig and I hung around and got other technical assignments and got my shit together and returned back to USA and Afghanistan to help make a mess of Russkies life and that was on n off for about a full decade - WE LEFT including crates of brand new Stingers cause at the very end US Pres caved in and said ok to USA made Stingers - We ended up leaving Bien Laden one hell of a lot of equip - ONE GREAT thing about that - One part in Stinger has a horrid shelf life nor is it possible to fix or replace it and by the time Bien laden tried to shoot aircraft down with them TOTAL FAIL
