Uh, what does being white have to do with this?

> only dumbasses think 'religion is dumb' and want to 'progress atheism'
That's a bit of a strawman. A good argument can be made for that sort of viewpoint. Religion is a very divisive and constraining force in the world, motivating lots of bad things like aversion to progress, discrimination, and wars. It was useful at a time, when humanity needed uniting, but it's not really needed anymore. Its benefits can be gained in other ways and the problems it causes are pretty major.

So, that's why I think that it's a good thing for atheism to progress, and religion to disappear.

> his 'we are all Africans' bullshit gets on my nerves
I think it's a good, unifying message. He's saying that we're all from the same place. Sounds like something that one would say against racists.

> how about let's not throw a blanket over all of religion unless we are defining it
My post did cover religion as whole, not just the Abrahamic ones.

> None of those conflicts - war, 'discrimination', etc, are remotely religious issues. they are entirely political. 100% of the time. we don't need to kill the scapegoat.
> We will always have bigots and Luddites. Religion isn't 'holding humanity back'
Disagree. Lots of problems are mainly, or entirely, motivated by religion. How about all of those Islamic rebels that are making waves at the moment? Their main motivation on that is their religion. Or how about homophobia, or discrimiation against atheists? That's very relgiously motivated too.

I think it's short-sighted to say that religion isn't at the root of any problems in the world, because it very much is. We can see it motivating all sorts of bad stuff throughout the world. Granted, were it removed, people may just find another reason to be an asshole. But overall there would be less of that sort of stuff going on, because there would be much less motivation for it. I think it's illogical to say that there would be just as much strife and division without religion, I don't think that humanity has some sort of arbitrary discord quota.

> we use religion to understand the world and to understand ourselves thru. It's spiritual/thought framework and i think that that is something that humanity needs.
Religion ain't necessary for that. Philosophy, getting in touch with yourself, ect, can all be gained without religion. It's a poor justification.

> And I'll agree with you if you say like 'fuck evangelicals' or something
> but not 'abolish all religion'
That's pretty much what I'm saying.

Though I wouldn't approve of it being "abolished" in the sense of it being made illegal or violently uprooted, but by spreading understanding and critical evaluations of it throughout the world, and educating people until religion is eventually dropped. That'd be the ideal situation, anyway.

> being atheist isn't some hyper-intellectual epiphanic übermensch mode of being
I'm not claiming that it is some higher state of being. No reason a person can't be an atheist but also be a moron. But I do view it as better than being religious.

> You aren't African. I'm not African. I'm not about to steal that identity from Africans for the sake of 'unity'.
But humanity does all originate from one place, and we're all the same species. You would prefer that we were all divided, rather than trying to look beyond race and focus on how we're similar?

> Islam isn't extreme
You're misunderstanding what I'm saying. I cited Islamic extremists, who are primarily religiously motivated, as an example. Most Islamic people are pretty normal and fairly harmless. It's the religion itself that I take issue with.

> The conflicts are about land, ideology, power, control, etc at best these things are VAGUELY tied into religious conflicts. but look more closely into these conflicts and you will see they aren't simply a proselytizing effort. it's barely a proselytizing effort. that's only the surface
Yeah, see, I can't agree with this. You can't just say "oh, religion isn't the primary motivation for anything, if it was gone there would still be as many bad things".

What about fanatical suicide bombers? What about Christian evangelicals going into Africa and trying to stop people using birth control? What about relgious people refusing women the right to have an abortion? What about religious people distrusting others they don't share a religion with? What about the whole range of religious extremists out there? Can you honestly say that all of these problems would be about as severe if religion were gone?

> Not everyone understands philosophy, and philosophy isn't usually spiritual. Religion is a precursor to philosophy and can coexist with it. It's not a justification, it's simply how people work. People are capable of feeling wonder/awe and we encapsulate these feelings within spirituality. It's not a justification and it's not a bad thing either
I still don't think that religion is necessary for those insights. And without it, a more secular form of "spirituality" or philosophy would likely come and fill the void anyway.

> Ugh
> don't reply to me
For the record, I still like you. No need to let this disagreement lead to bitterness between us, now.

> oh yeah and >being like me is better than being like everyone else
I'm saying that atheism is as a belief is better than religion as a belief, as it is less divisive and damaging and illogical. Not that any individual people are better just for being atheist. That's more complex.

And, to clarify, I never advocated "stealing African people's identity". What I'm saying is that I think it's better to lean towards a more unified identity, that identity being humans.

But you get my point. I've seen plenty of black people wearing "We're all from Africa"-type shirts. The underlying message is that we're all the same. Maybe if we spent less time focusing on what separated us (and what we can find to become insulted by) we'd all be better off.

In my view, doesn't seem like you can go far wrong just treating people as people rather than a certain race. Yes, unintentional racism can happen, even if you're trying to avoid it, but I think it's still good to try to be impartial.
