Don't know if it works for gaming, but my Cisco® Linksys™ E1200 (~$40) handles 30mbps Comcast just fine.

Why wouldn't it work for gaming? But yes I do game so it'd be cool to be able to do that without dc'ing every 10 mins.

Idk, gamers usually get high end modems, supposedly for lower latency. All I know is, it's perfectly adequate for torrenting, HD video streaming, and of course using fine foræ like Minichan. For using a few computers in a reasonable sized (i.e. not a mansion) house, it should do just fine for you.
It has never once disconnected* or had any noticeable lag for me.
*the Comcast network has derped, but that's not really the wireless router's fault

WiFi comes in different versions, 802.11b is the fancy name for the one that came out in 1999. the "technical" name for WiFi is IEEE 802.11xx where x is a letter or letters denoting the particular standard. It goes (in chronological order) a-b-g-n-ac-ad with A and B being released in '99 and AC being released last year.

It should say on the wireless router itself, if not (I'm assuming you're using Windows) you can right click in the bottom right on the list of wireless networks and it should say which you're using. Standards aren't everything, though. The CPU and RAM within the router can also cause a bottleneck. 802.11b (from 1999) can support in theory up to 54mbps (which is faster than any non-fiber internet as far as I know) but I doubt a router from '99 would be satisfactory. My advice: go to Walmart or Best Buy and drop $40 or less on a router.

Well, in common parlance "access point" and "router" mean the same thing (that is, a box which makes the internet wireless).
If you're on 802.11n, I highly doubt the router is the problem: it's probably Comcast.

Well, on a wired connection it generally ranges from 35-50 mbps. It's currently at a dismal 6.5 on wireless. Never had any problems on our PC which is hooked directly to the modem, but on my laptop/sexbox (both wireless) it shits out a lot.

Well if you have no problems on wired connections, it's not the ISP then. I would go buy a new router, myself. Yours may be defective.
