anyone else here back early to get alpha access? just curious. the first real playable release (with space combat stuff) is coming out here pretty soon. i'll be using it as a kind of benchmark for my current pc build out.
my video card is pretty obsolete but it still plays everything i throw at it on ulta at 1920x1080, which aint bad. i'll get some frame rate drop running dual monitors but i'm still between 50 and 60.

what's regarded as the most intensive game out at the moment? i don't even know, i hear a lot about titanfall but is that even on PC? or watchdogs maybe. what game would really tax my system on highest settings?

i'm still using an i7 2600k overclocked to 4.5 ghz on an amd maximus 4 motherboard , 8 gigs of ram and an evga 570hd (just the one.)

i don't want to upgrade until i have a reason to, so i imagine i'll get a 780ti when they hit 3 or 4 hundred bucks or so.

i think i'm on a tangent now. anyway, looking forward to some space piracy. anyone else?

it's a space sim/mmo kinda thing like privateer or freelancer or wing commander but with a persistent universe and massive multiplayer. made by the same guy who did all those games. it's crowdfunded up to 44 million at the moment and so it's got the funding of a AAA game and there are really high expectations from the devs, so, it may be a really cool game when it comes out in a year or two.

if you backed it early then you get access to the alpha testing and the beta release and all that.

have you played it? i wonder if it's any good. what engine does it use?

is crysis 3 out? i think i have crysis 2 from when i built this computer out a couple of years ago. if there's a game i can't run in ultra settings then i want to know about it.

what is cutting edge gaming today? anyone have an opinion?

dead dw !jdTkvovFCQ replied with this 12 years ago, 4 minutes later, 3 hours after the original post[^] [v] #482,189

@previous (squeegee)
i haven't played it, it just uses source.

I would say crysis 3, the witcher 2 (and soon 3), max payne 3 (though it looks really good it doesn't require a beast pc), far cry 3, arma 3, metro last light, bioshock infinite kind of

squeegee (OP) replied with this 12 years ago, 1 hour later, 4 hours after the original post[^] [v] #482,205

@previous (dead dw !jdTkvovFCQ)
hmm, bioshock infinite played like a champ.
i may check out far cry 3 or find out what metro last light is. maybe crysis 3 but i'll wait for a sale probably. crysis is only okay imo. looks good, but pretty standard shooter.

still though, star citizen is supposed to push 4k at release or something silly and the specs for it will probably require at least 8 gig of memory and maybe more like 16 will be optimal.

of course before it's optimized for release 16 may be required for high frame rate play in high res, and like a much better video card than i've currently got. we'll see. i want to wait as long as possible between upgrades. but more memory is no biggie.

so the Arena Commander alpha module was release so you can now fly a few ships in free-fly mode and do a combat swarm mode with aliens. there will be more modes and multiplayer coming next.
so far it's been running great, i've got the resolution set at 1280x768 with low graphics but it's still detailed as shit and comes across at near to 60fps with my gtx570. everything is pretty smooth and no crashes or major bugs so far.
looks really nice, and the ship breaks apart and does cool shit. the animated thrust vectoring and gimbaled weapon mounts are sick as fuck.

for an alpha i'm super impressed with the vehicle models and artwork. it's all very polished. if the gameplay is as expansive as they say it'll be then this game is going to blow Eve and other space sims out of the water.
...also i hear that the 300i has a slutty computer that tells you about missile locks and impending death in a sexy voice... i'm... considering spending more money again <.<
i got the aurora package which is the cheapest ship (you want to have goals in the game like aquiring new ships, right?) but the 300i...

squeegee !first/o5zA replied with this 12 years ago, 8 hours later, 5 days after the original post[^] [v] #483,041

huh, i was wrong, when the update installed it apparently reset my graphics to the default 1920x1080 resolution on high. I'm about to set it to very high and see what happens. Also i can't get my 10 year old joystick (that i loved) to work, a saitek cyborg 3d gold usb. apparently saitek never rolled out windows 7 drivers for it. there's probably a workaround, which would be nice, but i've already tried a few things and ended up with nothing but useless bloatware or viruses.
i'll probably get a joystick when the people on the reddit sub stop complaining about the joystick implementation. so far it's looking like the best input is a console controller. so i dusted off my old ps3 controller and made that work and i'm killing shit left and right. but it doesn't feel right. also there are way too many things to map and i can't figure out how to fire missiles, it keeps launching flares. mouse and keyboard is actually way easier to make it do all the stuff, but chase the mouse flying is lame. the problem is that i need to be able to pitch, roll, yaw, and strafe.

anyway. i just wish i had a driver for my old joystick, i could use that paired with a logitech g13 controller and have a poor man's HOTAS

so i've been going to the forums at robertsspaceindustries.com, which is the developer website, and it's cringingly bad. it would be fine except for the trolls, many of them are plain malicious but terribly transparent. unfortunately many people don't have the benefit of being a qualified troll themselves and are unfamiliar with the psychological nuances of fallacious argument and so quite a few bystanders have joined in the manufactured mass hysteria. it seems less like fanboys of another game and more like a protracted and organized effort to use the forum as a means of creating negative sentiment about the game development. i know several indie developers tried to sell their procedural engines to CIG (the makers of star citizen) and were turned down. it feels a lot like like the kind of digital retribution that's so easy to get away with these days.

but it's fun getting first posts in "oh my gawd i'm so concerned CIG is stealing money and making vaporware" threads and poking the bear with ninja edits and relevant sarcasm.

and yeah, i'm a fanboy of star citizen, fuck off, i have my reasons. namely the dude who's making it is the same dude that made some of my favorite games from back in the day. The guy is a proven developer of fun games that i enjoy. Just like if John Romero and john Carmack announced they were attempting to revolutionize their genre, the first person shooter, i would take it way more seriously than someone trying to develop an indie version in their basement. revolutionary or not. so yeah, i'm excited about it. more excited even than when id software released doom 3 (which was outstanding at the time, by the way) ten years ago.

i really really want to turn off my in-game social management communication system, hop in my ship, navigate to a jump point, jump to System X, head to a faraway space station behind a cratered and irradiated moon, land, hop out of my ship, read the handy holographic wall mounted space station map to find the tavern, head to the bar, locate the in-game social management communication system terminal being used by that cock sucking bag of cunts that called me a retard in Trade Channel, pull out my pistol, whip him in the face until he falls down, then shoot him in the knees so he'll have to get artificial legs and a bionic eye for his crushed orbital, steal his credits, shoot my way back to my pirate ship after detonating explosives hidden along the way killing dozens of civilians, take off from the space station, navigate back to the jump point, jump back to my home system, fly to my hangar, land, get out of my ship, walk over to my in-game social management communication system terminal, get on the Trade Channel and say, "who's retarded now, you gimpy cripple?"

i would check out the videos if you're interested in a sprawling space simish mmoish game with dog fighting and resource trading. there'll be piracy, bounty hunting, prospecting, exploring, salvaging, privateering, policing, milita, and epic capital ship battles. you'll be able to select fire and target ship systems on opponents to disable them, board their ship, shoot anyone who resists and eject everyone who cooperates out of the airlock without their helmets, steal their ship, repair it, register it with forged documents, and keep it.

i think right now you could pay something like 5 bucks to get access to the arena commander dog fighting pre-alpha module. you can check their site, i'm not sure. i don't think you have to have a ship package, but as cool as it is right now, it's only one dogfighting mode. there will be more and multiplayer too, so you might wait for that and see what all that will look like. i can't get past wave 10 in Vandal wave mode. I'm usually pretty beat up by then and it's bugged out on reloads and repairs so i get slaughtered by an elite. multiplayer will likely be pretty damn fun, so i'm looking forward to that. could be months, i have no idea how long it will be before they've get from this version 0.8 to the full alpha 1.0 (which will not be the persistent universe, i do not believe.)

but i've got magnetic boots for zero gravity that can be toggled on and off to attach me to platforms, so i can see interesting things being on the horizon :)

Wow it really does sound like an EvE Online killer!

So the dogfighting is all that's been released so far? 'Cause I'm typically not very good at tracking ships in three dimensions and usually end up dead in dogfighting situations in other 3D space games. I'm sure there'll be plenty to do in the full game but if combat is all they have finished now I could probably wait.

http://youtu.be/uJ2ErxCpzgo
here's a video of me streaming arena commander and using voice recognition software to control ships systems and launch music to VLC player.

http://youtu.be/7Xt_MqZeGTk
here is a video of me doing the same thing but instead of playing individual mp3 files i figured out how to launch live iHeart music radio stations.

making Voice Attack change radio stations was pretty challenging to figure out. i had to edit firefox config and do a regedit to stop the web browser from stealing focus from my game window. my workaround is to play windowed and regedit windows to open programs in the background, which only partially works. i don't get yanked out of the game anymore, i just lose focus and habe to click the game window to grab it back. so it's a pain since i've been playing with a ps3 controller.

i have no idea how to make it seamless, i'm probably going to have to wait for the devs to include a toggle for alt-tab to keep me in game.

also the way to "change stations" is to launch a new shortcut to a new tab which disables the previous tab and plays the new one. so after 20 minutes of playing and changing stations i had opened 15 tabs, so, that's not optimal. i need to figure out how to not lose focus, and to kill tabs as i change to a new one...
there's an option to stops a process by voice ans i tried using it to kill firefox.exe hoping that would shut it down and launch a new window with the next station, but that didn't work.

i'm not out of ideas, but so far nothing i've jiggered has worked well enough to call it a finished profile.

squeegee (OP) double-posted this 12 years ago, 4 minutes later, 1 week after the original post[^] [v] #483,774

oh yeah, and the profile i am using for voice command wasn't written by me, i'm just jiggering it. so i have to use the prefix "Betty" to turn on active listening.
"Betty, pin target, Betty match speed, Betty lock missiles, Betty turn on the radio," that sort of thing.

i dunno. i think it's a fake brand of old hair care pommade made for the movie O'brother where art thou

i just made a new gmail account and a youtube account and a twitch.tv account so i could do some recording and i tried streaming and got like 100 viewers. the game is still so new and so few people stream it (or can even play it) that i was among about 4 other streamers competing for hundreds of thirsty space sim fans. it was kinda fun.

it's pretty damn fun. it's like 3d Asteroids. i LOVE flying backwards through asteroid fields blasting Vanduuls and swooping around giant rocks and using my guns to pulverize small ones in my way.
the Voice Recognition program, Voice Ataack is fucking nice. it's super customizable. tonight i want to try Armchair Commander and bind voice commands to, all ahead full, hold heading, pitch up/down, yaw left/right, roll left/right, reverse thrust, decouple thrusters, strafe left/right/up/down, fire missiles,
and then have my friend use the ps3 control to only control the aim reticule and forward guns. then i'll add prefixes for active listening called Helm, Engineering, Tactical, so i can say "Helm, all ahead quarter impulse. engineering divert power to weapons, tactical aquire missile lock, Helm hold heading, tactical fire missles, Gunner fire at will, Helm yaw left, helm pitch nose 180 degrees, helm decouple engines, helm reverse thrust, engineering divert power to forward shields, gunner fire at will, tactical aquire target, etc, etc.

there will be capital ships, and imo that's how cap ships should play. or i guess in my opinion i think it would be fun to play capital ships differently than tiny nimble dog fighters. right?

nice. so got up today and saw a message on reddit, some dude wanted to make seamless voice control of music a reality, and so he made a neat little command promt control that modifies your media player as an executable so it works with VoiceAttack.
so now there is full seamless integration of the media player. i even have master volume control!

baller.
