They also discriminate against other east Asians. Koreans and Japanese hate each other. But it just interests me that someone with obvious Hispanic or Asian ancestry can be called "white" but someone with obvious black features cannot. For example Zimmerman is a "white Hispanic" but President Obama is never a "white black" despite the fact they're both half white.

I guess so. It's interesting to note that Thomas Jefferson's 7/8th white kids were legally white, but their 3/4th white mother was not. I like this quote from George Tillman in the Wikipedia article:" It is a scientific fact that there is not one full-blooded Caucasian on the floor of this convention. Every member has in him a certain mixture of... colored blood. The pure-blooded white has needed and received a certain infusion of darker blood to give him readiness and purpose. "

I'm not sure why they're doing this (perhaps because the "white privilege" thing is hot right now and they want to fit the square peg of white privilege into the triangular hole of half-Asian-ness in order to generate clicks and ad $$$$?). In America basically everyone who is partly white is allowed to identify as white except for blacks because they don't yet meet the criteria of whiteness here. Lots of groups we now consider white wouldn't have been seen as such not long ago.

You don't look at a person and see DNA
You see Halle and you see someone who doesn't fit your prototypical image of a black person and who isn't white, either, right? And that's how mixed race people are treated. Being a white-passing mixed race person like Elliott Rodger is totally different in that you are born into the privilege of being white passing and you can either embrace that for some reason or not
A lot of mixed race white passing people feel guilt over receiving white passing privilege and feel alienated from both/all groups from their background
It's not as black and white as black and white
If you want to talk genetics then know that most/all people are indistinguishably mixed genetically and that what we perceive as race is mostly superficial
