Topic: Anyone notice how rich people are always so glad to advocate more immigration?

Anonymous A started this discussion 12 years ago #34,987

I see it happening all the time and its good, i have been a immigrant myself. But you know there is this voice in the back of my head thinking that they should consider what a large amount of immigrants can do to the working class.

I don't think that is the case most majority of the time, that they support it because of this, but they simply like to appear as morally superior etc.... like all people really do. Not me though i am actually morally superior.

Back in the days when IRS considered me Wealthy - I DID advocate for more Immigration.

Few years ago my Wallet was drained almost dry and I still was and am an advocate for Immigration. A huge thing where I live because I can be across the border to Mexico
In 20 minutes.

Now that my Wallet is back to filling up - I get to donate money to political causes that help a pro Immigration candidate.

professional drug smuggler detected! seriously though you should consider the wider effects, for me its not so much as to help the working class but a matter of principle, for me large amounts of immigrants create a underclass, a class that is exploited.

I admit to exploiting the local Mexican, Iraq's Pakistan - Indian - and Planet Earths mix we find in the San Diego County area. But my exploitation is related to the huge number of quality Engineers I have worked with when I was full tyme at Qualcomm - back then we had 35,000 employees and most were on H1B Visas - They by the way were paid equal to those born in USA - I hired a bunch so I no.

As equally important to me is the wonderful world of Food those people from other cultures bring to me - Wood be so boring if I had to eat say only the Jewish food that Mom prepared when I lived at home.

Dang that is not true - Mom learned how to make the best Chile Relleno's in the world from Spanish neighbors (Spanish do it with more meat then Cheese) and she picked up the how to do a lot from other neighbors but it was still limited compared to what is available to me now.

Yes my cleaning gals are Mexican and I pay more then I have to so I feel morally ok - Gardener is a service, and they tend to also be Latinos.

@481,506 (B)

Yea - I no I live in an Ivory tower here in Cardiff by the Sea. Minutes away a huge mass of Genetic/Drug R&D companies and Electronics mostly Wireless dis n dat and Heavy staffed by High paid people
But most are on H1B Visas and most do not stay beyond maybe a decade. Those that are married and have children here end up of course with child as US Citizen who one day is old enough to beg for mercy and beg law to let parents hang out here 4ever

So I do not see the vast majority of Mexicans who are exploited in USA.

Well that is good to hear that you love so many kinds of food and have access to them, but nevertheless, a underclass is not something you want. A unchecked immigration policy will create a underclass.

I hear wot you are saying and in principle agree - However

Is there a single case in history of this Planet Earth where such does not happen - not even a question mark cause it seems human nature

@481,546 (HaikerensGuide !TBODHONKEY)

I am in favor of raising that minimum wage - However again that said

Prices of lots of stuff will jump up to compensate which means unless those raises are done in careful manner then the bottom line is those who get the pay will still not be
able to afford anything they need to buy. It could all equalize to net sum zero

Minimum wage in 1968 was $7.21 in 1996 dollars. Minimum wage in 2013 was $4.87 in 1996 dollars. Fair?

Anonymous A (OP) replied with this 12 years ago, 15 minutes later, 3 hours after the original post[^] [v] #481,565

If you agree in principle then you would not go and try to make it larger and even worse off, with the explanation that shit happens. Would you? Human nature can be horrible in the right circumstances
and a large very impoverished underclass creates these circumstances.

Also i have heard about the worrying inflation that a decent minimum wage can bring, i think that for the most part its very uncertain if these will indeed be the results, it seems debated a lot but
for the most part i think its exaggerated, for instance in my country when there were talks about making the unions increase the wages, the unions claimed it would cause inflation so high that it would be higher then the inflation that happened when the entire banking system collapsed in the country.

Of course NOT

However that drop is one of the reasons that USA economy became more better after 1968 (with a minor glitch here or there or everywhere)

Not to many years b4 that 1968 I worked as Check out guy for wot is now Ralphs supermarket - Pay was more then OK and because I worked part tyme I actually got a bonus for part tyme
Union rule which has gone away - Total flexible hours except the store closed at 9PM and security until my last 6 months there wood not allow me to work after store closed - Now all the stocking is done at night but by very low paid contract people. Seems only Trader Joes still has clerks do check out and stocking for same pay

I do NOT want to derail this great thread with Palestine buttttttt that is currently Exactly a problem Israel is faced with - In the past it was the people of Palestine that preformed the low wage labor in Israel - Much like USA and Mexicans/Latinos

Then with the bombings Israel stopped using the local cheep labor and now imports immigrants from Eu and Africa. This then further lowers the Palestinians to exactly wot you say - a serious improverished underclass living rite next door to over all wealth.

Anyway I don't think its the worry about how inflation can be avoided UNLESS the minimum wage is raised slowly - to fast and prices have to rise. McD's stock holders will demand burger prices jump up equal to wages - AND its not just the workers at Mc-D forcing that jump - the meat cut by minimum wage cutters will jump the cost of meat - Tomatoes-Lettuce picked costs go up

So it has to be a slow careful rise in wages or all hell breaks loose

you don't want to derail the thread but yet you bring up one the most sensitive topics in our times. I didn't know that about Israel and Palestine, all i have thought of is that its some kind of a huge
unsolvable problem, meanwhile i saw a documentary where its said that 'Israelis' basically live in a world where they accept that a war might break out any moment and they would all die.

I just think that a slow rise in wages is pointless, the cost of living keeps going up, 10 dollars more at the end of the month is not going to do much. Its like 1 extra hour of work and it equals
a pack of cigarets, this is the union and their slow approach

Given I worked/lived/attended/taught some uni level classes there its something I have followed a lot - Learned long ago that not all problems have solutions - Plus if you take many areas of Africa - North Africa - all the way to perhaps say Croatia areas - People been waging war for ages n ages.

> 'Israelis' basically live in a world where they accept that a war might break out any moment and they would all die.

Perhaps in the back of their thoughts? I dated a former Israel army gal - Really petite and damn sweet - hard to imagine her with a rifle but she had photos to prove she was a good shot etc

Its harder to think wot it must feel like knowing Iran is trying to make A-bombs for only one reason -

And rite were I live - If you cross the border its a huge amount of poverty you see which is of course why its the staging ground for people finding ways to cross the border any way they can - On my Beach a couple 3 tymes a year small boats land with people making a run for it - I dare not say if I helped any out - I can say I sure as hell did not make it more difficult for them.

I do agree that its outrageous for workers at McD's to end up on welfare while working full tyme - Food stamps and even a manual of D's telling workers how to apply - That really sucks

I have seen female soldiers from Israel, they do indeed look very hot. But anyway when it comes to immigration, i understand that it must be hard for many people to deny poor people a better chance
in life, but its a matter of principle that is either followed or not. Just opening the doors is taking the easy way and ignoring the real problem which is the countries that seem to be stuck in poverty

I am not so sure that not all problems have a solution, it can just appear this way. Like i have learned that, for example, in the eastern european countries, in the socialist times, people dreamt of a socialist state with a human face because capitalism just seemed so unrealistic and not doable.

> eastern european countries, in the socialist times, people dreamt of a socialist state with a human face

Movies then social media - long term perhaps that will be the great equalizer re problems and then solutions

This AM a journalist for PBS with dual citizenship in Egypt is going to leave because he sees Egypt stepping very much backwards after a move to democracy - He first lost heart and now fears for his life.

Saying this always gets me in2 net hot water - but I once worked for a US Congressman Charlie Wilson - He and his two GF's were successful in getting The top dogs of Israel - Pakistan - Saudi Arabia - Egypt to sit down at a table and work together for a full decade towards a common goal of booting out Russia from Afghanistan. Now I see people (top dogs) arrested and going to jail etc

But I did witness close up front a fucking miracle of men who hated each other working month after month without a single glitch and that was a full decade.

Thats quite a story, are you sure its real? If it is then that is amazing, having seen the movie and all. The way i learned about it was that all the muslim countries released their most dangerous
extremists from jail with this hope that they would all just die during or after their arrival to fight in Afghanistan.

Then having said that, i also have heard that Afghanistan (before the war) was actually the most progressive and secular country in the middle east.

Very real - Me just part of a team of people and my part was to provide communication tools to mujaheddin/mujahideen and train them on how to use - Also the big help was placing sensors of all kinds - Infrared - video sound sensors in the ground to catch approaching tanks/people - Horrid just horrid environment with hashed 2getter electronics on the fly - Stuff if lucky worked a few months and never after a winter - Solar powered stuff ended up so trashed after a wind storm -

But back then many mujahideen went on to become Taliban - but deal is we never got in2 the local politics - after all the goal was to kick out Russkies nor were we allowed to use anything that could be labeled USA made or even opened for a look to see that it came from USA - Shoot some stuff was made in Egypt then sent to Israel to make it better and then for us to give a try and all mostly paid for by the Saudis. Not to the bitter end could we use Made in USA but in the end - If not for Stinger Missile's we wood have lost and Russkies wood be still in control. Just took forever to get US approval of Stingers -

What I experienced in progressive is mostly how the Afghan men treated their kids and kids of hood - Super nice ultra nice n wood give shirts off backs to a kid that wandered in from another village down the road. Sweet people really. Most of my experience was with Afghan's and not any imported help other then of course Charlies people - Movie made it look so simple - Frankly back then we all thought Charlie drank and partied to much but we were also not political savvy and Charlie and his GF's were ultra savvy -

It's easy to think that rich people benefit the most from cheap labor, but you also have to take into consideration how it keeps down prices of the goods the middle and lower classes buy. Most Americans really aren't willing to do those jobs for the wages they are paid. Look at all the people bitching that the minimum wage should be $15/hour. Do you have any idea how much your food would cost if migrant labor were cut off and every single person involved in getting your food to you was paid $15/hour? You wouldn't be able to afford your morning coffee, that's for damn sure.

They're about the only hope for revolution. They live in squalor, depend on the state for sustenance and everything. They may have a lot of children but so many of them die from gang wars and drug use. If they had a great leader to unite under, they'd be quite the force to be reckoned with. But the good leaders always seem to either sell out, or get assassinated.

Black people are kinda dangerous in their own areas but they tend not to come out here. We have no need of brown immigrants when we can use unemployed teenagers to do their job better and quicker without needing someone who can speak a second fucking language.
