Linus Pauling was an Oregon State alumni and the library I worked at had a lot of his life’s work involving research on DNA and vitamins.
RDA is around 0.1 grams. Mr. Pauling took a daily dose of 3 grams, and even recommended 5–10 grams daily as a good means to prevent the cold.

Later research found his Vitamin C recommendations to be no more effective than placebo at preventing the common cold (in the general population). Athletes, however, have been shown to benefit.
