Lest we forget, Fossil made one running Palm OS over a decade ago. I just really don't get the point of them. I mean, why would I want a watch I have to charge everyday, is bulky, and looks ugly, not to mention expensive? All they can really do is tell you about texts or emails on your smartphone, but is it really that inconvenient to just pull out your phone and look? Also, data input on a 1" screen is destined to be a pain in the ass which is why this concept has failed before. What do you think fora?

it reminds me of a half assed wrist computer like the one leela wears in futurama, or a pipboy. the problem, imho, is that they try to cram tech inside things that don't need tech. like putting a flat panel tv inside a giant wooden box radio from the 30s. why merge the two? they are better as their own thing.
if tech companies want people to use wearables then they need to invent new and useful items to wear, not just jaz up old perfectly functional things with silly bells and whistles.

Smartwatches will likely be more popular when they can actually be useful. Perhaps as an accessory to something like Google Glass, or some technology that hasn't been invented yet (implants?). It seems reasonable to expect more technology on/in the body in the future, not less.

A gimmick? Sure.
If the utility of these smart watches increases in the future maybe that'll change.
Unless you're a super fitfag who wants to monitor their heart rate and track their jogging/biking routes there isn't much point in owning one... unless you just want failbook and text notifications from your smartphone sent to your watch but that's just silly.

I dont think YOU are familiar with it actually, have you been to the bay area? you know who hangs out with those involved in the tech scene? other IT nerds, everyone else is off doing other shit, why do you think that there is such a divide? everyone wants them gone in the first place, they dont have any friends outside their offices. I also know about this because I worked IT for quite a few years.

@480,388 (squeegee)Looks like Seiko solved the data input problem back in '83 with the Seiko Data 2000 and its detachable keyboard. You could also write your own apps in BASIC, thereby neatly avoiding the need for an app store.
