Lionsgate is one hell of a little film tv maker that has grown by leaps n bounds. Canadian of origin but run out of my ole stomping grounds Santa Monica.
Besides producing movies of their own they go out to film festivals and buy finished product and get it to you and me.
Hunger Games new Twilight Mad Men for TV - BUT Yes a HUGE HUGE number of films that did not do so good in release but with cable TV hungry for product that stuff is stocking stuffer money making stuff NOW.
Look for the remake of Attack of the 50 Foot Woman.
Have lots of friends that work for them. They throw fantastic parties.

i read a thing where they said they make shitty movies for 2 reasons:
1. despite being "bad" they always turn a profit, because hey, when you only spend 100k on it it doesn't have to be a blockbuster to turn a profit. Huge budget movies with big name actors cost a fortune and are a higher risk because the risk of failure is so great that if the movie is anything less than a blockbuster then they lose money on it.
2. everyone needs to learn somewhere, and you don't want to fuck up your first day on James Cameron's set because of lack of experience, so you work on Sharknado and if you fuck up it's not that big a deal. i.e. shitty movies are like internships for film grads.
makes sense. they are reliably profitable (if only marginally) and they train a steady stream of skilled workers who can move on to more important projects.

Damn so much to disagree with your take there. Could rite a book. I once did a gig as VP for a most famous movie studio but WAS not in the Movie biz per say. End product was Laser disk technology. But CEO insisted on all VP's reading the script and signing off on the movie/budget/deal and I had no clue wot I was doing for that forced part of my job. It did give me an inside view of the process - UGLY biz of buying and selling people -
Anyway I will give one example of a Movie designed to be a work of art - Francis Ford Coppola's One for the Heart. It ended up being finished under pressure and rushed 2Market and put Coppola in debt for about a decade. Got bad reviews but I really really enjoyed the movie.

not really my take on it, but like i said i read something, this thing, that basically outlines why people make movies with Roger Corman (director of Carnosaur 3).
just read the top 3 comments, they explain it better than i did

@previous (squeegee !first/o5zA)Ah Corman. Perhaps an exception to the rule except I no there are a few others like him. For a number of years I lived in Marina del Rey and Santa Monica. Cormans studio was out in open to view as one drove by.
