It's like email, but in real time (like IM), and multiple people could be in the same "wave" and you could add in little widgets like a poll.

No. If you have an hotmail account you can chat with someone on gmail, yahoo, or any email provider. MSN chat only allows you to talk to other MSN chat users. Google wave is an open protocol- so anyone can make their own server just like email.
And as you type it submits, so people can see as you type a word (you can turn this off). You can drag and drop images/videos from your desktop and have it show up. It is web based, and uses HTML5 technology.
If you use it for a while you will see all the features it has, there are many.

It's a group IM, and yes it has many other features.
However no other IM does anything close to what wave does.

They made it invite only instead of opening the floodgates. i was one of the first 5000 invites, but couldn't use it because nobody i knew could get one. that was the biggest problem
the next biggest problem was that it was TOTALLY distinct from Gmail/email. You had to check your waves AND your emails. there was no way to make a complete switch.
related to that, it wasnt' backwards compatible with email.
those are the reasons it failed. and they could have all been avoided.

That was only for a bit, and now it's completely open. In the past making things invite only and giving out tons of invites like they did meant more users because it's "exclusive". Facebook is big because of this, as is Demonoid and others.

Facebook was aimed at a certain group - harvard members. People on Facebook knew other people on Facebook.

The idea was that the "exclusive club" image would draw members, and it did, and they just slowly loosened that to more universities, and then just everybody.
It's why Demonoid is well known, anyone can join, but they pass themselves off as a "private tracker" so people want to join, even though it's no better than TPB.
