Since Ks asked me to make a thread, and I do enjoy taking pictures of my models.
I feel I should say that these are painted pretty mediocre by the standards of the hobby. Certainly nowhere near the amazing standard that others can paint to. But I'm happy just having passable quality, so that's okay.
Do you have to assemble any of the models? Is it an expensive hobby? Do you sell the stuff?

Just 40K, since I like 40K in general a lot. Though I might just try Warhammer Fantasy one day.
Assemble? Mostly not, though the tanks do require lots of assembling. See, the army I play is in a weird place right now where they're mostly metal models, so all that needs assembling is gluing the backpacks on. Most models in 40K are multi-part plastic kits.
Expensive? Yes, rather. But that's okay, I have disposable income and I enjoy it a lot.
Sell it? Nah, this is all for me. But it's not uncommon in the hobby for people to sell off armies that they don't want anymore or to do commission work.

Oh yeah, 40K's a great setting. Very deep, very distinctive.
By online game, I assume you're referring to Eternal Crusade? Loving it so far. Sounds like an awesome game. The devs are looking really solid, and they've even released gameplay footage very early on. The devs are also being very open with fans, got questions of mind answered by them a few times.
How about you? As a person who doesn't like 40K, what's your impression? I've only seen the reaction of 40K fans so far.
As for tournaments, nah. Not yet. Don't have a big enough army or enough experience yet. I might try someday, but competitive 40K is pretty damn brutal. And my army isn't the most powerful in the game on a competitive level, so it'd be tough. Not impossible, but very tough.

Ha, yeah. You do need patience. Lots of models to paint. And Emperor help you if you're playing a horde army.
> I'll likely check out the pc game when it's ready.
Then you may be interested in how their FTP model is going to work. Basically, you're restricted to playing as an Ork boy. Individually you're weaker than a basic Space Marine, but you get numbers on your side. As is fitting with the characterisation of the Orks, really. Certainly an interesting take on a FTP model, I'll be interested to see how it works out.
Then once you buy the game, you get access to all factions.

Eh. The current pictures more or less cover it. Like I said, I'm painting them fairly basically by the standards of the hobby. Though I guess you can't really see the drybrushing so well.
> Well... What are some tips that you would suggest, then? My phone has a better camera, so that's covered. And I can move them out if the "box" (my wardrobe). Anything else?
Hmm. Lighting. Maybe some directional lighting that gives them a light source, shadow, and some contrast. Something that makes them seem... real. Maybe I'm just being bitchy... But something that would provide more contrast and make the colors more vivid would be great. The models would look like something you want to lick... Or fight your warhammer battles for you... Or something you could not imagine being photographed in some guy's wardrobe and thought came from a movie scene...

Okay, those are some decent tips. Though the contrasting colour one might be difficult, since I don't really have anything to use for that and standard practice in the hobby is usually a white background anyway. But we'll see. Anyway thanks for the advice, they're easy fixes.
Tell you what, I'll take some more pictures once I've done my next batch, which would be another tank and a completed command squad. This could actually be pretty helpful to me to paint things quicker, so that's cool.
Oh, also I'll try to remember to put the pen next to the tank when I get home. Would be a good chance to try the photo tips.

you know, it's funny, in reality they paint tanks very frequently and often times they have lots of handmade touches.
my [redacted] was in the army and he painted tanks as punishment for "criminal behavior" and they didn't even wash they dirt clods off them.
in fact, his actual job was supposed to be to wash them, but painting over the dirt made them way cleaner so he just did that and went home early.
squeegee !first/o5zA double-posted this 12 years ago, 8 minutes later, 2 days after the original post[^][v]#477,703
what are the models cast out of, tin? if so it'd be pretty cool to get a set of sharp punches and a jewelers hammer and set about customizing a tank with bullet holes. With a rotary hand tool you could really go to town with it and add blast damage and with some bondo type putty you could fashion all kinds of patched up armor plating or even full on weapons or whatever.
if i bought a set of the army that you hate (or love to kill or whatever that's all about) would you pay to buy a fully painted and battle damaged "retreating enemy army" set? or do people do that sort of thing?

The models are, apparently, made out of pewter.
As for adding battle scarring, nah. I want to keep that to a minimum. I'm going for more of a clean, professional, well-maintained look with this army.
And as to whether other people do it, sure. People do all sorts of customisations of their models. Though I don't think that many would switch things around for specific battles.
> or is this shit like gospel and i speak heresy?

I think Squeegee wants to battle scar an enemy army (that you haven't painted, and then let you paint it) with tools of mass destruction and Bondo and extra tin and love. (I'd trust him, and I work with Bondo and polyester glazing putty, and extra tin every day) He actually seems like he's in the right field to do the things he is saying... Those models are urethane plastic? They are metal? What are they before you paint them? Do you have to sand them down before painting them?

Nah. Sisters are only "female Marines" in that they also use power armour and bolters (and even then, their own unique variants). Otherwise, Sisters lack the genetic enhancement of Marines, which is pretty much what makes a Space Marine a Space Marine.
And, you know, they're organised and operate very differently too.

1st pic. All my shitty cards in all their shitty glory. Those white cardboard boxes are filled with remains from drafting RTR block, M14 and THS block. I have a bunch more shitty cards from like Onslaught and earlier but those aren't in my apartment. Those are two 20-sided dice for life (from Avacyn Resotred and New Phyrexia) and those green dice are regular 6-sided dice for +1/+1 counters, planeswalker loyalty and tokens. Each of those deck boxes contains a shitty 60 card deck. The orange rectangular thing is just a card sleeve.

This is a pic of what's in those deckboxes. In order from closest to furthest
1. Budget legacy burn (redundant right?). I tweaked it by adding in reforge the soul but it is garbage and I will make it a proper burn deck once i stop being cheap and shell out for goblin guides/chain lightning. I am interested in going more creature-focused and throwing in 4 Reckless Abandon because hellspark elemental or Keldon Maurauders into reckless abandon seems like maximum value.
2. Casual Standard U/B control. I never added a wincon so it is just grindy with no real payoff
3. Casual (legacy legal i guess) Mono W. Slows you down with gideon's lawkeeper, white knight, silver knight, beloved chaplain and some honor of the pure then beats down with serra avenger, angel of jubilation, serra angel and finally, Akroma, Angel of Wrath! Has 4x StP, 4x O-ring and 2x Reprisal along with 1 wrath and a disenchant to stabilize. Needs a lot of work to be even remotely competitive but it is by far the best deck i own.
4. Casual Standard G/R aggro ramp. This is basically just GR_Goodstuff.dec. I usually play it against the U/B control and it's about even matchup-wise
