Also, if you don't mind watching animu you should check out an OVA called The Time of EVE. The overall tone is debatable but I found it to be pretty depressing, while fairly optimistic

Try most anything by Lars von Trier (Dogville, Dancer in the Dark), Gaspar Noe (I Stand Alone), Michael Haneke (Benny's Video, The Seventh Continent), Werner Fassbinder (Fear Eats Soul, I Only Want You to Love Me), or any Italian neo-realist film (Bicycle Thieves, Umberto D, Open City, Accattone).
