Legalise, regulate for safety, and tax reasonably, I think. Y'know, as you should do with any psychoactive substance which can end up being ridiculously lethal if produced wrong.

while we're at it decriminalize possession of heroin, cocaine, meth and all the other scheduled drugs.
invest heavily in rehabilitation and drug treatment as opposed to investing in arresting and jailing.
obviously the threat of jail time does nothing to dissuade use, and not only that but drugs are everywhere in prisons.
the "War on drugs" might as well be called the "War on your susceptible children" since drug use knows no class and every corner of society generates drug addicts.

And perhaps we should get rid of our prison system altogether. Have a Norwegian style system for those that behave, and a Japanese style prison for those that don't. A two-tier system that incentivizes good behavior. And it would cost less and have a lower recommitting rate.

i would be happy if we didn't have privatized jails. there is absolutely no incentive to prevent recidivism when you're paid by the prisoner. you want them back.

and really it's not like a "bad prison" with high recidivism doesn't get more prisoners. They are the only prison available in the area and you don't get much choice (even as a judge) where to send prisoners. So there's no way to stop a bad prison from being bad, you certainly can't boycott them. How would that even work?

decriminalization, which i am a proponent of, is not the same as legalization though. i don't support paramilitary pigs throwing poor people in jail for a bit of drugs. but they should probably have some rehabilitation and a real support system instead of just tossing them in jail to rot for 5 to 7 years.
you can keep heroin off the streets and also treat addicts with kindness. you don't have to jack-boot them just because it's prohibited. And you don't have to have opium dens just because you decriminalize simple possession.
