Student loans are a good thing, when used responsibly.
I don't think the government should be quite as free with loans as it is, though. It's a good step forward that they are starting to regulate loans to some of the for-profit shams that provide students lots of promises but no useful job skills.
It's not a bad idea for them to be stricter with loans relating to other degrees that have little usefulness on the market. Even just to show the students stats on what a typical degree would earn them, and ask them to sign off that they understand the current market reality vs. what they will have to pay each year on the debt schedule.

Most any bachelor's at an accredited, brick-and-mortar school is worth the loans, in my opinion. It's a prerequisite to get hired into the majority of good jobs.
It starts to get trickier for grad degrees... where you've really got to push to get into a school with good assistantships & a reasonable placement rate to make it worthwhile. At that point, you are narrowing your field of job prospects & must realize that.
It actually does get harder to get hired if you've got a grad degree in an unrelated field, vs. what you're applying for. But employers hire in people with bachelor's in weird unrelated stuff all the time.
