Presumably, he's back on because he has nothing much else to do, or he's depressed and being drunk is an escape from that.
As for helping him, I'm not sure that we really can. I think he needs massive IRL intervention and guidance to help him stop this sort of behaviour.

I'm not sure that punishments alone will make him grow up. Really, I'm not sure what else could be done to him, bar becoming homeless, and that's not going to help anything.

I'm going to try an AA meeting again. I keep thinking of them as a cult, but that's probably because I want to defend alcohol. It would be better for me psychologically to attend an AA meeting than to continue drinking poison and make an asshat of myself.

Yes. I need to do this for myself. There's only so many times I'll get support before people give up. If I continue drinking, people will just get annoyed by it and eventually not care. I don't want alcohol to be the only thing left at the end of the day. I'd rather try AA a few more times and quit while I'm ahead, rather than going to AA as a last resort.
