Well, no. But another important difference is that the Iraqi people were voting for people to run their government and not to become a part of the country that had just forcibly occupied them. OP's comparison is is a little shoddy in that regard. (Also, the militia at Lexington were resisting having their guns and powder taken away, and, probably to a man, considered themselves British. The question of whether the colonies were fighting for independence really hadn't started to make the rounds yet. OP's argument is a little shoddy all around.)

I was being facetious with the Iraq thing, but it's important also to consider that Crimea was Russian territory from 1783-1954, and is majority Russian. It's quite possible that the majority of Crimeans would rather (re)join Russia than remain in the Ukraine: given the ethnic, historical, and cultural ties to Russia the referendum results are probably honest. At any rate, it's European stuff that goes back hundreds of years and America really should just mind its own business and not be funding coups or trying to escalate the situation with saber rattling and red lines and sanctions.

Other than not making the Putin-Gazprom run government (Because Putin and Gazprom had nothing to do with the protests in Kiev, yeah?) of Russia look like freedom fighters, I'll agree that people should have a right to elect their government.
