i've never had a problem with the client and the updates... i don't think i've ever even noticed it do an update.
what's your beef with the client? runs fine on my machine. my only complaint is that some of the games are really really shitty so i make sure to research games a bit and not buy based on title alone.

You are likely opted into the beta, that has multiple updates a day sometimes. If not that, then some files are corrupted and you should fully uninstall it, delete the files, and reinstall it. The update prompts always have a 'close' button, and do not force you to restart the client, so even so you can mostly ignore them.
