Most owners of dangerously obese dogs are in denial about their dogs’ condition as well as how much food the dog was eating. If you love your dog and want it to be around for a healthy future, you have to ‘get real’ about what the dog is eating.

to be fair quite a lot of dog breeds aren't what they used to be. just look at the basset houndalso german shepards are really very prone to diseases and hip problems. just look what inbreeding has done to the slope of the german shepards hips. Dachshunds used to look like real dogs and could walk properly. not anymore.
i don't know much about beagles as a breed, but here's a modern 2 year old beagle...

...and here is an antique engraving of the hunting beagle before dog show breeders made the breed shorter, fatter, and probably less healthy. i'm not sure they are used much for hunting anymore, and if they do then the hunters likely come from hunting stock that is markedly different from show dogs.
e.g. elhew pointers (hunting dogs), and (i forget what they are called) but there are some "old fashioned" breeders who breed classic breeds like german shephards that are from old working lines and not crossed with show dogs. i forget the term.
