I wouldn't pity them. Illinois in general and Chicago in particular is a textbook example of transparent, fair, and efficient government operating within its constitutional bounds.

Because gun ownership is heavily regulated, Chicago's homicide rate is negligible. High taxes and a relatively generous welfare state have solved the income inequality problem, and common sense business taxes and regulation have insured that Illinois is every entrepreneur's dream state. Why won't baggers and libertarian wingnuts see the light already?!
