163 years to be exact. 2177 is when everything hits the fan. it starts with a large industrial accident, the fall of the japanese space elevator. it shouldn't even happen, but you know, one world government deregulation and privatization policies allowed it to go uninspected for 50 years. the collapse only partially damages the ground at the elevator anchor, the real damage is in orbit as large chunks of cabling cracked apart and causes a chain of damages the ultimately skirt the earth with sapce debris totally destroying all satellites. the solar power rerouters in space are damaged as well and we have to go back to burning fossil fuels for the brief period of time before hypernukes are set off by greek spearatists. recovery becomes a real impossibility as nuclear winter chills us into an iceball earth.
so enjoy life while you can, time is running out.
