It'd need to be broader than the Political Compass. Two dimensions isn't enough to describe ideology — rather, a set of attributes, which might fall on spectra, or might not, and might be simply irrelevant to some people.

One could acquire new rhetorical devices as one levels up. Ad hominem attack would be a starting ability, but levelling up would grant access to new ones, such as "move goalposts" or "red herring".
Of course, making reasoned arguments would require one acquiring evidence from the greater Internet.
You could also pick a history or traits for your character, like an educated background and such.

So, how about the plot?
Here's my idea: FrankUsrs (or whoever is running Tinychan these days) starts a board war against all other BBSs, having been stirring things up for the last few months. However, the twist is that Frank has secretly been taken prisoner, and a vengeful Kimmo Alm is masquerading as him. His goal is to destroy the BBS scene so that AT can safely rise again. DM is also on the scene, being a wildcard who will help or hinder everybody in some way.
The player is a new poster who randomly found Minichan, and has to carve out a niche for themselves whilst trying to stave off the incoming BBS apocalypse.
