Topic: Could the United States have a 51st state sometime within our lifetimes?

It appears that counties in Northern California and Oregon want to secede and form their own state.

What do you think about a possible new state?

as far as i know only texas can break up and become smaller states without the consent of US congress. It's part of the texas constitution (it's the clause that makes people think texas can secede. we can't, but we can become 5 individual states at any time we like.)
Also texas is really the only state solvent enough to actually do this... we even have our own military.

also, interestingly enough, Texas is the only state that issues it's own Purple Heart to it's own military.

How come you guys get such special privilidges? I'm guessing it's because Texas is somehow more powerful than other states?

Texas was an independent republic, so when they joined up in 1846 we got some special provisions because our Presidents were badasses.

The idea to split California into multiple states has been tossed around since at least the 60s, and probably farther back. It seems to pop up at least once per decade as something fun to consider, but the issue never seems to gain any serious traction. So... I wouldn't bet on it.

EDIT: Wikipedia apparently has a whole page on the history of California partition and secession movements.

It already exists — it's between Lebanon and Egypt.

also if texas was it's own nation again our GDP would be like 14 or something in the world, right between russia and australia.
It's actually pretty wealthy as fuck around here, even our poor people live in brick and lumber houses and have big screen TVs and iPads.

oh, but fuck california and their #8 ranking, it's only because of the bible belt that we don't have all that sweet sweet tech money. But we'll get it, austin is getting very attractive to tech start-ups.

It's because of surplus production. Something the rest of America outsourced to China.
