Topic: Okay, let;s have a talk about "micro-aggression"

Anonymous A started this discussion 12 years ago #33,688

Is it something real or something just a bunch of people who like to read their fears and intentions into other people's actions do? Do you actually need to intend to mean what you mean when you commit "micro-aggression"? Or can someone else just come along and read whatever they want into what you are saying and accuse you of being a douchebag? If you don't intend on meaning something and actually mean something else, then are you deserving of all the racist slurs the people lob your way??

What does Minichan think?

It runs on a gamut between tempest in a teapot and subtle actual racism.

It's important not to overreact, though, at some of the more frivolous ones. Its unreasonable to expect everyone to have an in depth knowledge of every culture on earth. There's a scene in King of the Hill where Hank greets his new Laotian neighbors by cheerfully asking "so are you Chinese or Japanese?" Given Hank's Texan upbringing this was not an unreasonable assumption to make. The appropriate response would be to understand where Hank is coming from and take it as an opportunity to educate him -- not fly off the handle and assume he's being maliciously racist or trying to marginalize Laos or the Laotian people.

Holding the door for someone using a wheelchair: is it a kindness or an ableist privilege microaggression? Or offering to help a woman change a car tire: chivalry or chauvinism?

Ultimately, the intent of the person must be considered as the deciding factor of whether it was an aggression or not. In a world with different cultures, ethnicities, abilities, and beliefs there will always be honest misunderstandings. These should be resolved with understanding and explanation. Unless they are deliberately malicious in which case you should be upset about them.

Would microaggression be like putting watermelons and burning crosses in a black man's minecraft house?

@465,658 (Metæ)
i had a lady one time that stopped walking when i tried to hold the door. She just looked at me and stood there, and i just stood there looking at her holding the door open. Then she made the "after you" gesture at me, and i just dropped the door and let it close and then walked away because i was leaving, not entering. So i let it slam in her face and i just laughed, said "okay", and walked off.

she looked like a cunt anyway.

This one actually does sound pretty tricky. You either look like a "nice guy" or feel like a complete asshole for not being helpful out of kindness.

Or we could allow micro-victims to drown in their own self-loathing.

That's why it's good to just ask. If she starts bitching about the patriarchy, just go fuck off and do a burnout out of there.

Yes and yes. It's surprisingly tedious to change a tire.

Microaggressions are a real thing, yeah. Generally a case of your ideology showing in a harmful way that you don't perceive because it's your ideology.

Someone was micro-agressive to me today. It was awful.
