I'd wager it's because the Volvo 850 has an inline five cylinder engine, which is just a V10 sawn in half. Indeed, Volkswagen's new I5 is actually that: a Lamborghini/Audi V10 cut in half. Given that relationship, it seems to make sense that they would sound similar but then an I4 doesn't sound like a V8,

Come to think of it, why didn't Ford stretch the Mustang a foot, strengthen it a bit and then drop the Triton V10 in? It would have been a neat Viper rival.
