I'd wager it's because the Volvo 850 has an inline five cylinder engine, which is just a V10 sawn in half. Indeed, Volkswagen's new I5 is actually that: a Lamborghini/Audi V10 cut in half. Given that relationship, it seems to make sense that they would sound similar but then an I4 doesn't sound like a V8,

It's just that it doesn't have the high-tone v10 sound I seek in a supercar. Even an F250 can have it, but I have never seen a Viper have it.

And a flat-plane V8 will often sound like a 4cyl if it doesn't have the exotic headers.

Come to think of it, why didn't Ford stretch the Mustang a foot, strengthen it a bit and then drop the Triton V10 in? It would have been a neat Viper rival.

Perhaps they could do that with the new platform. Perhaps they could put it in a Mustang-based Mark IX
