There was a time when people turned on their computer, connected to the Internet, and harnessed the power of the world wide web to... listen to people talking. Why?

OP is from the future where you can just download the memory of having listened to something directly into your head.

I am currently locked in negotiation with some memory dealer from the future who wants my memories of being shitlisted from AnT over 1000 times. It's apparently a pretty lucrative business. Anne, my wife, says I should give all this up and just go back to our home in 2112. I tell her she isn't even from there, and then it's just all arguments and "You're not from there either!" or "I could deal with Nazi oppressors even if I didn't have flying cars with voice control..." Apparently, I'm the bad person now. Sheeesh!

This reminded me of something. At work, when I'm reading a book on my break, people will come up to me and say "You still read?" "What is this, 1950?" And they aren't joking.

Are they shocked that you're using paper books as opposed to a Kindle, or shocked that you are reading words for fun?

Both. Only one person says it ironically. Some people mention Youtube as an alternative.

Kindles are too fragile for me. The screens crack like fucking eggshells.
