@OP

I wish I could remember, I loved that show growing up! IIRC Q was always rustling jimmies somehow or another, not strictly evil, but more like woody woodpecker, always instigating shit.

I'm just now getting into it. I have 7 seasons of material to be interested in its grate
But that's exactly how it was! But it was endearing. Nobody on the enterprise likes it though they all just get pissed when he shows up

Well, he did put the Enterprise crew on trial for the crimes of humanity and threaten to destroy the entire species in the pilot. In the episode where he turns Dr. Crusher into a dog, he talks about how he'll have kill the main guest star if she doesn't come with him back to the collective. (after it's revealed that the continuum killed her parents) Every time he shows up people almost die or the Enterprise is nearly destroyed.

He's fun from an audience's perspective because you know he is there to create, often harmless, tension that ends up being neatly resolved. If I actually had to be a crew member working on the ship, I'd probably dislike him too.

Picard brings up the pilot like every time they meet. they should know better
riker seemed to be amused at first until you know
i understand why he's disliked but not why not one crew member enjoys it
like they didn't even lighten up when he made a mariachi band appear on the bridge

Not really.

> riker seemed to be amused at first until you know
What? Riker was as pissy as you would imagine. When he was given Q powers in the second Q episode, he was forced to not save a dying baby rather than use the power he had been given. He wasn't amused.

> i understand why he's disliked
Okay... So what's with the post about it?

> but not why not one crew member enjoys it
eh? I don't think one crew member actually enjoyed the prospect of getting killed by some crazed space entity protecting its mate or some menacing race out to kill Q even though the Enterprise was protecting him. I don't think the bridge crew enjoyed their little Robin Hood holiday. (Well, maybe Vash did, but she's not crew) From an audience perspective, Q is fun. But I can't find a reason why Starfleet would find him anything but a threat. So, within the bounds of the story I can't imagine why anyone would consider Q "fun" in any manner of speaking.

> like they didn't even lighten up when he made a mariachi band appear on the bridge
Well maybe they should have.

Oh yeah, about the mariachi band... Picard finally got to smoke a cigar during that episode.

Meh, aside from the story not making much sense when Q puts them all in danger for his amusement (which he did pretty much every time he showed up) and them just being cool with that, they wouldn't have had much of a story if they had just relaxed. Besides, Picard had shit to get done, orders to carry out, people to save, diplomats to soothe, and missions to accomplish. Q is sort of like that friend who bursts in drunk while you are trying to write a term paper that is due the next morning, and then invites everyone over to your dorm room for a dance party when you tell him to get the fuck out because you need to study. His character brings the conflict, and the resolution is generally just playing his game until he agrees to go away.
