Topic: I'm thinking about getting a Rasberry Pi for XBMC.

Any ways to save money that aren't obvious? I know they're already cheap, but I like to save money whenever possible. Any downsides I might not be aware of? I just want to set something simple up, emulated games would be a bonus, but the main goal is XBMC and add ons.

I know flash is out, but that's the only big one right? I mean the Pi community has entire OS developed around XBMC, it'll work fine right?

If you mainly use H.264 you'll be fine, most other video stuff will lean on the cpu.

You'll probably want the more expensive of the two models because it has more ram which is nice for XBMC.
Like others have said the raspberry pi can decode various kinds of formats with the GPU, but you need to purchage additional licenses for that because lol copyright and shit. More info at http://www.raspberrypi.org/archives/1839
Beyond that the only costs I can think of would be an ethernet cable (You'll probably not want to use wifi for streaming media), hdmi cable, sd card if you didn't buy the pi that comes with one, and possibly a case if you're feeling fancy. You will need at the very least an USB keyboard to set it up.

Thanks a lot for the rundown! I'll make a new topic when I order the stuff, might be a bit I'm gonna weigh all the options etc. Thanks again.

Also get a relatively light theme, otherwise it will be slow as fuck. I use the metro style one.

Also there is no Netflix support if you want that

@461,449 (dw !jdTkvovFCQ)
Right on, I think I have Metro setup on one of my computers.

No, I'm not interested in Netflix, but I really appreciate you pointing that out, it might be a problem for many people.
