Take it to the next level and plan a garden around stuff you're able to freeze or can. I don't know what zone you're in, but here the easiest things to produce and store are peppers, squash, corn, zucchini and tomatoes. You can make some easy and great breads out of zucchini! In years past I've tried canning, but personally I think canning is honestly too much of a pain in the ass. Next year if I can't freeze it, I'm probably not gonna grow much of it.

Being raised on a farm I learned to appreciate the idea of producing your own food. Last year I built a chicken coop and got 20 chicken, best thing I've ever done for food. Man is 20 chickens too fucking many, but I have endless eggs! Seriously, I have pawn eggs off on people or my fridge would fill up with em. I don't buy meat much anymore, eggs have all the protein I need, and they can be cooked a thousand different ways. If you like producing your own food, consider chickens.

Yeah! Our crop rotations include carrots, beets, collards, squash (summer and winter), okra, eggplant, and tomatoes.

We are vegan so there won't be any chickens :)

If cabbage grows well in your zone consider rotating it in. I've found cabbage to be one of the most versatile and tasty vegetables around, it doesn't grow well here (or I just haven't had luck with it) but I try to keep cabbage in stock at all times. Here's a staple winter soup I make a lot during the winter, I believe it's even vegan friendly. http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Healing-Cabbage-Soup/ I usually add a Tablespoon or so of Italian seasoning and let it cook in the crockpot.

I've considered building a kale bed. I've been told a well built bed (in a good spot) can produce enough fresh kale for a few people everyday throughout the kale season. Fresh kale every day would be nice. I did try growing some kale last year, but I bought the wrong kind or picked it too late, it was too bitter. It seems like every year I'm eating less meat, so I enjoy trying to produce different vegetables and see what works.
